This past week, California Senator Rod Wright was planning on presenting his online poker bill, Senate Bill 1463, for a vote in the Senate Governmental Organization Committee but in a surprising turn, Wright pulled the bill from the agenda.
Apparently, Wright decided to pull the bill from the agenda due to the fact that the bill had received opposition from tribal casino operators as well as card rooms in the state. The bill would legalize and regulate online poker in the state and many were ready to vote yes for the bill.
Before the vote was scheduled to take place, Chair of the committee Wright, spoke out, stating that he has decided to pull the bill from the agenda. With this announcement, everyone in the meeting instantly began talking and many left the room to discuss this turn of events in the hallway.
The bill was first introduced by Wright in the spring and despite those in favor, the gambling tribes in the state as well as card rooms were not in favor of the bill. There was even opposition from those who are in favor of legalizing online poker due to the fact that they do not agree with specifics listed in the bill.
Those opposed to the bill state that legalizing online gambling would give too much power to international gambling operators as well as Las Vegas and hurt the tribes in the state in the process. However, supporters of the bill are arguing that the legalization have the opportunities to raise millions of dollars in revenues for the state. The money that could be currently coming into the state is now going offshore to those who offer the same options that could be available in the state.
