Case Against Former California Gambling Official Could Hurt Online Poker Potential

CaliforniaAs if the state of California has not been through enough difficulty trying to enter the online poker marketplace within the US, another factor may now be at play. Discussions of online poker have been ongoing in the state as the interested parties cannot seem to agree on how the activity should take place and who should be involved. Now the legislative potential for online poker may be damaged by a recent case involving a former official of a California gambling enforcement agency.

According to a report at the Sacramento Bee, Robert Lytle is said to be involved in misconduct as part of a work related incident involving the Casino M8trix, which is a card club located in San Jose. The club was part of a skimming investigation which involved over $100 million in funds. Attorney General Kamala Harris has stated the Lytle was given confidential information about the investigation while working with the card room and the information that was given ‘potentially compromised the effectiveness’ of the investigation.

Basically, Lytle was reportedly given information of the investigation by a bureau agent in 2013, that included information as well as documents. Harris filed the complaint, stating that the receipt of such information undermined the integrity of the investigation.

This case is not directly involved with the online poker industry at all or the legislation that is currently being discussed within the state. However, any accusations that suggest corruption in an environment that is regulated such as the casino gaming industry of California, could prove to be problematic to passing online poker within the state.

The hope among proponents of iGaming in California is that this incident will have no effect on the proposed legislation under consideration within the state or any bills that might be released in the future. Only time will tell if opponents of the option will use this case as a way to damage the possibility of online poker within California’s borders or if the discussions will continue in a positive manner with no influence from this complaint by the Attorney General.
