Last Tuesday morning, a robbery took place at the Wynn Macau, with $6.1 million in chips stolen. Macau’s Judiciary police have been searching for the alleged culprits, a dealer of the VIP gambling club and possible one of his family members. Early reports indicated that no force was used during the robbery nor was the suspect armed. Footage from surveillance cameras onsite showed the culprit simply walking out the door after stuffing the gaming chips into a bag. As of this past weekend, arrests were made in the case.
Macau police announced the arrest of two individuals, a croupier of the VIP gambling club, with a surname of Lei and his uncle Ho. Supposedly, Lei’s uncle was an accomplice in the plan to steal the chips from the casino. Both men were arrested on Thursday in Taipa and were taken to the Prosecution Office on Friday.
Police were able to recover a portion of the stolen chips and as of now, the suspects have remained quiet on where the remaining chips are. Officials told reporters in Macau that Lei walked out of the casino at 7am on Tuesday after completing a shift as a croupier at the VIP gambling club. Reportedly, Lei told another employee to stay quiet while he was stuffing chips into a bag.
Lei began working at the casino back in 2009 as a security guard before he started working as a croupier in 2011. According to several reports, Lei has admitted his guilt and stated that he has a gambling problem, having had to take out loans to cover losses. Ho has denied being involved in the theft.
The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau of Macau has asked Wynn Macau to complete a report on the theft. The DICJ has also asked other casino operators to review surveillance procedures of staff members to ensure all regulations are being followed.
