Choctaw Nation broke the ground for its Hochatown, Oklahoma entertainment and gambling complex. It is named the property Choctaw Landing and it is a short distance from the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
The tribe opened a hotel tower in 2021 at Choctaw Casino & Resort. It is located in Durant, Oklahoma. Choctaw Nation plans to complete the new casino project in late 2023.
The project features a 200,000-square-foot gaming venue with a hotel, outdoor amphitheater, restaurants, and 600 slots. There will be 100 guest rooms in the hotel while the casino floor will offer eight table games.
The property includes a 12,000-square-foot retail complex. The tribe is reported to spend about $165 million on the project and create more than 2,000 jobs.
Hochatown is 180 miles from Dallas. The state of Texas lacks a licensed commercial gaming site and its legislature has strongly opposed its legal proposals for casinos. Yet, people who advocate for gambling expansion in the state claim that some players are often forced to visit Oklahoma to bet thus denying Texas gaming revenue.
Janie Dillard, Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma’s senior executive officer released a statement a few days ago. It said that Choctaw Landing will be a perfect entertainment venue for Oklahoma players and those from states like Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas.
Choctaw Nation focused a lot on the region’s beauty and its heritage when designing the property. It will plant native plants on its grounds, and include historical displays and tribal art in the casino complex.
Choctaw village is located in Hochatown and it is the ancestral land of Choctaw tribal members. The tribe gave JCJ Architecture and Manhattan Construction Company contracts to develop the gaming property.
Gary Batton, Choctaw Nation’s Chief released a statement saying that residents will get many opportunities from Choctaw Landing. Also, the Choctaw Nation Reservation located in Southeast Oklahoma will get tourism and business opportunities from the new hotel.
The Expansion of Choctaw Casino
The Choctaw Casino & Resort that the nation opened last year has a 21-story hotel tower with 1,000 rooms. It was a $600 million expansion project that increased the casino’s gaming space. Besides, it added 3,300 extra slots thus increasing their total figure to 7,200.
The gaming venue added a poker room having 30 tables and 40 table games. It currently has 136 gaming tables thus making Choctaw Nation the third biggest tribal nation in the United States with over 200,000 members.
Texas Debates About Gambling
The University of Houston Hobby School conducted a poll in January 2021. It discovered that about 58 percent of Texas residents support the legalization of casino gambling. About 18 percent of the poll’s participants back a limited expansion of betting in its three Indian reservations, dog and horse tracks.
Las Vegas Sands wants Texas to expand its gambling industry and is advocating for pro-gaming laws. Mark P. Jones, a Rice University’s Baker Institute fellow, said in 2021 that betting legalization in Texas would be a key issue in its politics until it allows casino gambling.
He said that a third of the state’s Republicans want to reverse existing gambling laws. Still, pragmatic Republicans claim that such a vote would hurt them soon if they support casino gambling.
