Atlantic City Casino Suing Large Group of Gamblers

The Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City recently lost $1.5 million when a group of fourteen gamblers went on a winning streak at the mini baccarat tables. The gamblers were seated at the table and soon realized that the same sequence of cards were being dealt hand after hand. The gamblers began to up their bet until they took the large amount of cash from the casino.

It was after 41 consecutive hands won, that the security at the casino caught on and was convinced that a scam was taking place. The winners were questions and some severely. One winner was woken in the night as security guards restrained him in his hotel room. The man was kept in his room without food or water for eight hours while his room was searched. Nothing was found so the man was eventually let go.

The casino soon found out what exactly happened. The casino had just purchased a new shipment of playing cards from a manufacturer in the state of Missouri. The cards were supposed to have been sent to the casino shuffled thoroughly. However, the new shipment was defective.

The cards were not shuffled and the Golden Nugget used the cards in the mini baccarat game without checking the decks. The Golden Nugget is now suing the card manufacturer, which is reasonable, but they are also suing the gamblers, stating the group should not have been paid their winnings.

Benjamin Dash, is the lawyer who is representing the group of gamblers and Dash has commented on the case by stating:

The Golden Nugget appealed to gamblers to come in and play games licensed and sanctioned by the state of New Jersey,” he said. “My clients did exactly that, and then were denied their winnings. There is absolutely no law in New Jersey that would permit the Golden Nugget to declare the game illegal because it failed to provide shuffled cards.”

The lawsuit was filed against the gamblers this past July and the casino is seeking the cash back and citing that the gambling regulations in the sate require that all casino games offer fair odds on both sides. This is not the first time that an Atlantic City casino has allowed games without shuffling the cards. Back in December, a dealer at the Trump Taj Mahal did not turn on a shuffling machine and games were played for almost four hours without the cards being shuffled. The casino was fined and nine employees were fired, however, no attempt to withhold the winnings from the gamblers of the games.
