The Greek Hellinikon project is aimed to be the biggest such project in Europe. Hellinikon is planned to be the largest integrated resort on the Old Continent that should attract thousands of tourists from all over the world.
The problem with it is that the country of Greece has already had several delays when it comes to making important steps. Although significant progress has been made during the last couple of months, it seems that things are at a halt.
What Greece did was select two potential operators, only to ultimately select one to be in charge of the project. The only two that actually applied for the project were Mohegan Gaming and Hard Rock International.
Once the Greek officials approved their applications, things finally looked as if they were moving forward. However, it seems that new problems arose along the way.
The Problem With Paperwork
Once the two companies were given the green light to turn in their paperwork, new problems arose as one of them managed to make a mistake in the papers. The mistake, however insignificant, led to confusion in Greek bureaucracy, meaning additional delays could pop up, which could last up to six months, and neither of the operators liked that.
According to a piece published on a Greek business site BusinessDaily.gr, the company that messed up the paperwork was Hard Rock International. However, fixing that should be relatively easy.
HRI now faces a potential disqualification from the race due to the mistake that was made, and that could lead to HRI suing the Mediterranean country.
On the other hand, Mohegan Sun also threatened a suit if Greek officials decide to choose HRI over it, as that could mean that the entire process was unfair.
Plans to start construction of the casino in place of the former Athenian airport now seem pretty impossible. Even if Hard Rock International makes things right and makes a better pitch than its competitor, there would still be a suit in order.
One way or another, it seems that Greece can expect at least one suit from one of the companies. That’s definitely not what the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was expecting when he selected the two operators. All in all, things may not look as bright as they thought they would when it comes to the economy of this country.
The Hellinikon project will happen sometime in the future, and it could turn out to be a beautiful place, attracting people from all over the world who will be able to enjoy cutting-edge casino games, as well as various other activities in a beautiful Mediterranean country filled with rich history and culture.
