Mississippi Needs to Move on Online Casinos

The March revenue report is now out from the state of Mississippi, and the 25 casinos in the state set a new record in terms of monthly revenue. This state has continued to see plenty of growth in that industry, and it should lead to the legalization of online casinos moving forward.

The adjusted gross revenue for casinos in the state during the month of March came in at $235.1 million, and that was a record by a wide margin. Not only that, but this figure represented a growth of more than 13% from a successful month of February.

There is no real plan to legalize online casinos in this state, but it is something that has at least been discussed. Projections show that this state is leaving money on the table each month, and the overall numbers could be tremendous with iGaming.

A Look at Projections

It’s impossible to know just how well online casinos would fare in Mississippi, but it is possible to compare this state to others in the industry. When looking at the per capita revenue and the overall population, Mississippi could end up putting up some solid numbers.

Lawmakers trying to lobby for online casinos point to the fact that this state could bring in more than $53 million per month in revenue. That would put Connecticut well behind the other leaders in this industry, but still ahead of some other states.

There are currently six states with a legal online casino industry, and the average monthly revenue is more than $119 million. That number is boosted by Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania as those states put up huge numbers every month.

Mississippi could slide into the number four slot, and this is a state with a strong and growing gambling culture. Other states have proven that it doesn’t take long before the online casino industry really starts to take off in a big way.

A Look at March Numbers

Even though there are 25 casinos in the state of Mississippi, all of those locations are located in three separate places. Those locations are broken down as the coastal, central, and northern parts of the state, and there is one region that has a distinct advantage.

The Coastal casinos continue to see the most action as those properties accounted for $149 million of the total. Northern casinos were able to chip in with $53 million, and the central casinos brought in $32.4 million.

Not only was the total monthly revenue a record, but the coastal region became the first to ever post a monthly total over $145 million in a month. Year-over-year revenue only went up by a little more than 3% as March has always been a big month for this industry.

This industry has bounced back after a very slow start to the year as the January revenue total actually saw a massive decline. There have been some recent changes to gaming laws in the state, but allowing online casinos would be the biggest.
