Sunday Night Baseball: Los Angeles Angels vs. Houston Astros

It’s been another rough year for the Angels, caught in a competitive division, and not ready to compete with the best. How long will Mike Trout put up with this before requesting a deal?

The Astros have been playing well of late, trying to keep their lead on the A’s atop the division. They look to close the series with a win.

Los Angeles Angels

Nothing has changed with this team this year. Mike Trout has continued to crush the ball and hit very well, but he hasn’t had much support. The pitching staff has been horrendous, and they don’t have too many reliable hitters. The craziest stat with this team, is that they have actually outscored opponents by 29 runs this year, but they’re a few games under .500.

The Mariners are 15 games over .500 despite being outscored by more than 20 runs. They don’t get the lucky roll of the ball, or anything good their way. They will finally be making a managerial change after the season. Maybe that is what it will take.

Welcome back, Shohei Ohtani! He has not taken the mound for the team since mid-June, but he is finally back as a starting pitcher. In nine starts, Ohtani pitched 49 1/3 innings, posting 61 strikeouts, 20 walks, and a 3.10 ERA. He was 4-1 and was efficient. He was only able to start once every six or seven games though, so they had to have a six-man rotation with him out there. It’ll be fun to see him pitching under the lights though, no doubt.

Houston Astros

Where to begin with a team that has no weak link? The Astros, for the second year in a row, have been absolutely unbelievable. From Alex Bregman to Jose Altuve to George Springer, this team just has so many guys that can come to the plate and clobber the ball. On the other side, Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole have been fantastic.

The latter will be on the mound tonight, looking to get it going. They made a bullpen change, bringing the recently reinstated Roberto Osuna over to be the team’s closer. They just signed AJ Hinch to an extension and are ready for the playoffs.

As mentioned, they will send Gerrit Cole to the mound for his 28th start of the season. He has posted a 12-5 record with a 2.85 ERA in 170 2/3 innings of work. He has struck out 234 batters while walking 54. In his last start against the A’s, he struggled. He allowed four runs on four hits over six innings of work. Bounce back time.

Astros close the series with a win

With Cole on the mound, good things generally tend to happen. Still the case. He will get it done, with seven efficient innings of keeping the Angels at bay.

The Astros will score five runs for the day and that will be plenty to get them the W.
