Labor Day Baseball: Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals

The Washington Nationals will host the St. Louis Cardinals for a Labor Day game on Monday afternoon. The Nationals are coming off of a loss on Sunday as the Milwaukee Brewers blew past the Washington Nationals by a score of 9-4. The Cardinals have lost two straight games to the division rival Cincinnati Reds.

Despite the two losses the St. Louis Cardinals are still a playoff team entering Monday. The Cardinals now hold the second Wild Card spot in the National League and trail the Brewers by one-half game for the top spot. The Washington Nationals will miss the 2018 playoffs after underachieving in a big way this season. The Nationals are -163 over the Cardinals on Monday.

Scherzer Starts For Nationals

Despite the disappointing season for the Washington Nationals, Max Scherzer has continued to be one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. Scherzer is 16-6 with a 2.22 earned run average through 28 starts this season. He is coming off back to back mediocre starts against the Philadelphia Phillies. Despite his recent struggles, Scherzer will be on the short list of Cy Young candidates in the National League.

Bryce Harper is having another solid season for the Nationals in what could be his final season in our Nation’s capital. Harper is in his final season of his contract and will be a highly sought after free agent this offseason. The All-Star outfielder has hit 30 home runs and driven in 84 runs for the Nationals. Rookie of the Year candidate Juan Soto has also been an offensive force since joining the team.

Cardinals Cooling Off A Bit

After a record-setting month of August, the Cardinals have opened up the month of September by losing two straight games. St. Louis played themselves back into a playoff spot, but now must prove that they have the talent to hold on down the stretch. Young Jack Flaherty will make the start on Monday against the Nationals. Flaherty is 8-6 with a 2.87 earned run average for the Cardinals this season.

A big reason for the recent surge by the Cardinals is first baseman Matt Carpenter. Carpenter has turned himself into one of the most feared hitters in the National League and has a great shot of winning the National League Most Valuable Player Award this season. Carpenter leads the National League with 35 home runs, and will look to stay hot against Scherzer on Monday.

Washington Wins on Labor Day

The St. Louis Cardinals blew a great chance to beat the Reds on Sunday, and then had to get on a plane and fly to Washington D.C. The Cardinals offense has been inconsistent of late and they will face one of the game’s best pitchers in this game. Look for the Cardinals offense to be slowed down in this game.

Despite a disappointing 2018 season, the Washington Nationals still have a very talented roster. Bryce Harper and Juan Soto have a ton of power and can carry an offense. With Max Scherzer on the mound in this game, the Nationals have a huge advantage and will earn the win. Bet the Nationals -163 over the Cardinals in this game.
