Yankees vs White Sox Betting Preview

History will be made on Thursday when the New York Yankees play the Chicago White Sox at the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, Iowa. The White Sox will serve as the home team for the game, which begins a three-game series that will be continued on Saturday. The White Sox are also the favorites in the game with a moneyline of -160, while the Yankees have a moneyline of +135.

The Chicago White Sox more or less have their season on cruise control right now. Despite losing back-to-back games to the Minnesota Twins, the White Sox still lead the AL Central by 10.5 games. For what it’s worth, the White Sox are still 6-4 during the month of August and 19 games over .500.

Meanwhile, every game matters for the New York Yankees, who are six games back in the AL East but just two games out of a Wild Card spot. The Bronx Bombers finally appear to be making their move in the standings. They are 8-3 in August and have won five straight series.

New Kid on the Block

A few weeks ago, Andrew Heaney was pitching for the Los Angeles Angels, but now he’s starting for the Yankees in a historic game in Iowa. However, the lefty was languishing with the Angels and hasn’t been much better with the Yankees, who have seen their rotation disassembled by injuries and illness. Despite striking out 13 over 10 innings while pitching in Pinstripes, Heaney has allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits over his first two starts, with five of those 10 hits behind home runs.

On the bright side, the White Sox have had plenty of down days recently. They’ve scored three runs or less in half of their games in August, including Wednesday’s game when they were shut out by the Twins. However, there is no lack of power in Chicago’s lineup with Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert back from the IL, especially with Jimenez hitting four of the team’s 17 home runs over the last seven games.

Cy Lynn

White Sox ace Lance Lynn will have the honor of starting Thursday night in Iowa. In 20 starts this year, Lynn is 10-3 with a 2.04 ERA, making him one of the frontrunners for Cy Young honors in the American League. He’s allowed one run or less in six of his last seven starts, so Lynn is only getting better as we head into the dog days.

On the other hand, the Yankees are starting to find their offensive rhythm lately despite missing a few key pieces. They’ve scored at least four runs in seven of their last nine games, averaging 5.8 runs per game during that stretch. Even with Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres, and others sidelined, Giancarlo Stanton has been going well while Joey Gallo adds another power bat in the middle of the lineup.

Iowa Loves Pitching

To be fair, the Yankees are probably worth a flyer in this game as an underdog at +135. While the dimensions of the field are that of a major league stadium, nobody knows how the stadium will play.

With that being said, the gap between Lynn and Heaney is so big that it’s best to bet on the White Sox to win.
