Wednesday Night Baseball: New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay Rays

The New York Yankees visit Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, where they will take on the Tampa Bay Rays in a divisional matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 pm central time. The Rays have been eliminated from playoff contention, as the Red Sox have clinched the American League East division and the Wild Card game will be between the Yankees and Athletics.

As it stands, the Yankees are 97-60, 9 games behind the Red Sox and 10 games ahead of Tampa Bay, who is 87-70. This will be the 3rd game of the series between these two teams. Sonny Gray led the Yankees to a 4-1 victory in game 1, and Luis Severino got the win in game 2, by a 9-2 final score. The Yankees are favored in this matchup: at -175.

Pitching Matchup

Masahiro Tanaka will be on the mound for the Yankees. According to MLB.com:

“Tanaka has enjoyed a strong second half, but he stumbled last time out, allowing five runs in four innings to the Red Sox. He has a 2.64 ERA in 12 starts since July 15, and is 1-1 with a 1.20 ERA in two starts vs. the Rays this year.”.

Tanaka is 12-5 on the year and has a 3.67 ERA. He has struck out 155 on the year as well. The Yankees will surely be expecting another great game from him tonight to get ready for the playoffs.

Ryne Stanek will be on the mound for the Rays. MLB.com had this to say about him:

“Stanek got the job done Sunday in Toronto when he inherited a one-on, two-out situation in the eighth and retired Randal Grichuk — the only batter he faced — on a popout. Since the beginning of June, he is 1-2 with a 2.35 ERA in 48 appearances.”

Stanek’s record is 2-3 on the year, and he sports a 2.70 ERA (Indicating a lack of run support). He has struck out 76. He will need to put together a great performance against this great Yankee lineup.

Yankees

Young Miguel Andujar has been leading the Yankees in terms of hitting the ball with consistency. He is hitting .298 on the year, and has driven in 87 runs. Giancarlo Stanton has been the leading power hitter, hitting 35 home runs and driving in 94, both team highs (Although the run production has been fairly balanced around the lineup.

Tampa Bay Rays

First baseman Joey Wendle has been hitting the ball very well as he leads the Rays. He is hitting .300.  C.J Cron has hit 28 home runs and has driven in 70. There is no question that the Rays will need these two to play well to win this game.

Yankees Top Rays

Tanaka has been great for the Yankees since he has been there. I believe that will carry over into this game. Expect a good game from Tanaka and the Yankees to continue hitting the ball well. Bet on the New York Yankees at -175.
