UFC 291: Poirier vs. Gaethje Betting Preview

The exciting UFC 291 event is finally taking place tonight from Salt Lake City, Utah, with the BMF Title on the line when top-5 lightweights Dustin Poirier and Just Gaethje fight in a rematch.

This is the perfect matchup to have for the BMF belt after Jorge Masvidal retired, and the belt is technically vacant. This belt stands for the toughest and the most bad-ass fighters in the UFC who are down to fight whoever, whenever–and always put on a show for the fans.

In their first meeting, the fight was a “fight-of-the-year” type performance from both. Both men hurt each other, but Poirier came out on top in the 4th round when he caught Gaethje and finished the fight with “The Highlight” being out on his feet.

Now, let’s break down this fight and see who your betting pick should be on tonight when these two go to war in the famed UFC octagon.

Dustin Poirier–Paid in Full

At this point in his career, you really can’t say anything negative about Dustin Poirier’s fighting performances. He has beaten just about everybody you can without being the undisputed champion of the world.

He has been in wars with the best in the world and seemingly always comes out on the other side with his hand raised. From Max Holloway to Eddy Alvarez, Dan Hooker, finishing Conor McGregor twice, and then finishing Michael Chandler in his most recent bout last November.

Poirier loves violence, but he goes about it in a very conscious way where he uses legit skills to be successful. Some MMA athletes just like giving and receiving damage–Poirier likes to give a lot more than he takes. His slick boxing has improved so much over the years, along with very solid wrestling and a dangerous guillotine that makes it tough for anybody to have the confidence in shooting a takedown on him.

Justin Gaethje–Car Crashes…With a Seat Belt?

Gaethje is called “The Highlight” for a reason. There literally has never been a Gaethje fight labeled boring or one that hasn’t resulted in the people watching it being on their feet. Violence is a language Gaethje speaks fluently.

He has improved so much under the coaching of Trevor Whittman, and that has made him a legit title contender on any given night. Gaethje is much like Poirier, who just hasn’t put it all together on the most important nights. They have both lost two title fights apiece.

This time around, Gaethje is still his wild self throwing every shot with bad intentions, but it’s slightly more calculated. Like Poirier once said in an interview while describing Gaethje’s new style–he still looks for car crashes but has a seat belt on.

Poirer vs. Gaethje Pick and Prediction

After breaking down both of these world-class fighters and what they are bringing into the cage tonight, it only proves that MMA betting is the toughest thing to do in all of the sports betting industry.

This fight should be a 50/50 coin flip, but the advantage is slightly in Poirier’s favor. He is the bigger man and just has slightly more refined skills. The leg kicks will be a big factor, and if Gaethje can compromise his leg early, this fight completely changes.

But the betting pick to make is Poirier getting his hand raised. There’s a very slim chance this fight goes the whole 25 minutes, so an early-round finish sounds like the most likely option.
