The Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox continue their three-game series against one another on Wednesday night. After winning the series opener on Tuesday, the Blue Jays are road favorites on Wednesday with a moneyline of -170, while Boston’s moneyline is set at +145. The game also has an over/under of 9.5 runs.
With Tuesday’s loss, the Red Sox have now lost four of their last five games. It’s yet another rough patch for Boston that has dropped the Red Sox three games under .500. As a result, the Red Sox are now seven games out of a playoff spot, making virtually every game a must-win game for them.
As for the Blue Jays, they are moving in the opposite direction, winning five of their last six games. Unfortunately, that stretch has come on the heels of a four-game losing streak, although the Blue Jays are surely getting themselves back on track. They are also holding firm to one of the Wild Card spots in the American League.
He’s No Ace
Jose Berrios will start for Toronto on Wednesday, hoping to pitch better down the stretch than he has for most of the season. In 24 starts this year, he’s 9-5 with a 5.39 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Berrios was excellent in July, helping the Blue Jays win all six of his starts, but things have started to fall apart in August with Berrios posting an 8.79 ERA over three starts with Toronto losing two of those three starts.
The good news is the Blue Jays have started to flex their offensive muscle, averaging 5.8 runs per game over their last six games. Ironically, Toronto’s lineup has produced just four home runs in those six games, which is uncharacteristic for them. However, Alejandro Kirk and George Springer are both swinging hot bats, while the Jays have plenty of other potential threats in their lineup.
Hear the Bellos
Rookie Brayan Bello will get the start for the Red Sox in their hour of need. He’s made three starts and two relief appearances this year, pitching to an 8.47 ERA and a 2.29 WHIP. The 23-year-old has spent most of the season in the minors, where he’s 10-4 with a 2.34 ERA, so it could only be a matter of time until that translates to success in the majors.
Unfortunately for the Red Sox, their lineup is back to struggling, scoring three runs or less in six of their last ten games. The good news is Boston is getting surprising contributions from Christian Arroyo, Alex Verdugo, and Kevin Plawecki. However, heavy hitters like Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts have gone cold when the Red Sox need them the most.

With Berrios going through a rough patch, the Red Sox will have a fighting chance in this game. However, they have no idea what they’ll get from Bello, who will be facing a Toronto lineup that’s starting to heat up. Bet on the Blue Jays to win a high-scoring game on Wednesday.
