While many individual states in the US are considering online poker or overall gambling legislation, one legislator is looking to see sports betting added to their home state. State Representative Alan Morrison of Indiana has introduced a bill that would allow legalized sports betting in the state as well as introduced a second bill that would allow for Daily Fantasy sports options inside the borders of Indiana.
According to a report at the Indy Star, Morrison stated that gaming is an area in which the state of Indian has become reliant upon. The revenues created help many areas of the state and the gaming revenues have been trending down. Morrison feels as though something must be done to figure out how to fix the decrease in gaming or improve on the options available today.
While the expansion into sports betting would be beneficial to the states gambling revenues, other ideas have been placed on the table as well that will be of competition to Morrison’s bills, including allowing the riverboat casinos to operate on land as well as seeing the racinos begin to offer table gaming. When considering that the revenues have seen a steady decline over the past five years consecutively, something will need to be done to see the gaming become prevalent once again.
Gaming operators of the state have asked legislators to do something to fix the issue and this may be the answer. HB 1073 is the first measure introduced by Morison that will allow the casinos of the state as well as off track betting facilities to provide sports betting options. The Indiana Gaming Commission must agree that the option is permissible based on federal law before this can happen. This of course would be in contention with federal legislation but Morrison is hoping that Indiana can already have the bill on the books if New Jersey is able to win their case against professional sports leagues including the NCAA.
The second bill, HB 1074 would allow the racinos of the state to allow wagering on Daily Fantasy Sports. Players currently are able to take part in this type of betting online in contest form but Morrison would like to see live options available as well.
