Saturday Night Baseball: Mets (43-58) vs. Pirates (54-51)

It’s been a long year for the Mets and it seems their 9-2 beginning to the season is something of a joke. They have won just one series in the past three months, and their struggles have continued nonstop.

The Pirates, on the other hand, have won 12 of 13 and put themselves into a position to have a shot at making it to the postseason. The odds are still not in their favor, but there is now hope.

New York Mets

Not only are they losing just about every night on the field, they are losing off of it too. Yoenis Cespedes will have surgery on both of his heels, and will be out between eight to 10 months. As a team they are batting just .229, while all of their free agent veteran signings have failed to pan out. Asdrubal Cabrera has been by far the best player on the team, leading them in hits, average, home runs, RBI’s, doubles, and total bases. It’s been a breakthrough season for him whereas the rest of the team has struggled to get it done.

The Mets will send their ace, Jacob DeGrom to the mound tonight for his 21st start of the season. Though he has an incredible 1.71 ERA and 159 strikeouts in 131 1/3 innings of work, his record is just 5-5. He has kept it consistent all year, but the story has continued to be about his lack of run support. With even a few more wins, he’d be the leading Cy Young Candidate.

Pittsburgh Pirates

After they had been playing below .500 level of ball, the Pirates all of a sudden went on a surge. They’ve won 12 of 13 to make themselves relevant in the playoff conversation. In the AL, they’d have no chance, but luckily they aren’t there. Corey Dickerson has had a fantastic season, with 110 hits, 44 RBI’s, and a .310 BA. Gregory Polanco has been a big source of power with a team-best 18 home runs and 58 RBI’s. The Pirates and their opponents have scored the exact same number of runs this year.

Trevor Williams will take the mound for his 21st start of the season. Thus far, is he has gone 8-7, posting a 4.11 ERA in 105 innings of work. He has struck out 72 batters while walking 37. He has not allowed a run over the last two starts. In 11 innings of work, he has allowed eight hits and walked five batters.

Argh! The Pirates win again

Another day, another win for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Along with the Oakland A’s, they are the hottest team in the league, playing some very competitive and impressive ball.

Six solid innings from Trevor Williams will give the Pirates enough time to get their offense going. Starling Marte will go deep late in the game to help power his team to the victory and a 55-51 record.
