Rocket Mortgage Classic Betting Preview

Viktor Hovland Wins BMW Championship

The 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic closes out the month of June and turns the page to July as the PGA Tour schedule enters its final handful of tournaments before the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Including this week’s tournament, there are just six weeks remaining for players to gather as many FedEx points as possible. The 72-hole event begins on Thursday, June 29th.

This week is the fifth edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic which is played at the Detroit Country Club in Detroit, Michigan. The tournament is traditionally a birdie-fest, with winning scorers averaging over 20-under par.

Tony Finau (+1400) is the defending champion and returns to DCC to defend his title. Finau won by a wide margin, trumping three second-place finishers by five shots and setting the tournament record with a four-day total score of 262 (16-under par). Finau is one of the betting favorites heading into the first round.

The Playing Field

The traditional watered down field features four of the top 20 players in the Official World Golf Rankings this week. Max Homa (+2000) leads the way as the only player sitting inside the Top 10 to tee it up at DCC. Joining Homa are Finau, Justin Thomas (+1400), and Collin Morikawa (+1600).

Nate Lashley (+10000) and Cameron Davis (+3500) return to Detroit as past champions looking to get back into the winner’s circle for the first time since claiming their first PGA Tour wins at this event.

Rickie Fowler (+1400) looks to put it all together after his fantastic final round at the Travelers that snuck him inside the top 15. Fowler has three top 10 finishes in his last four events played.

Detroit Country Club

Like TPC at River Highlands last week, PGA Tour pros are expected to eat this course up with low numbers. Accuracy off the tee and putting are paramount this week if players want a shot at the title on Sunday.

The course offers the flattest layout on Tour and plays as a par-72 at approximately 7,370 yards. There are two courses on the property, the North and South Course, both designed by famed golf course architect Pete Dye. Tournament play is set up using 17 holes from the North and one hole from the South Course.

Tournament Predictions

With low scores expected it is easy to look at the odds board and anticipate the top players that are in the field finding themselves in contention on Sunday. Guys like Thomas, Fowler, and Morikawa all have excellent opportunities to nab their first win of the season.

We predict that when the dust settles on Sunday, one of three players above are walking off the 18th green as the winner. Fowler, who is a Rocket Mortgage Ambassador, is our pick this week. The 34-year-old is due for his sixth PGA Tour victory and his recent play over the last weeks tell us that he is right there. The stats are there too, ranking third in driving efficiency and ninth in birdie average.
