Road Teams Control Week 1 of the National Football League

The National Football League wrapped up its Week 1 portion of the 2023 season. The theme of the week was road teams pulling big upsets. Of the 16 games played from Thursday to Monday, ten went to the road team. Let’s recap the events of Week 1 in the National Football League:

Detroit Lions Edge Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes and the passing game for the Kansas City Chiefs was rusty, and they also missed Travis Kelce. The Detroit Lions took advantage of it and ended with a 21-20 win to start the league.

The Lions are a pick of many to win the NFC North, and anytime you can grab a road win, that’s a massive help in the divisional standings. Now, the Lions host Seattle in Week 2.

49ers Dismantle Pittsburgh

Brock Purdy heard all off-season how folks want to see if his second year in the league has him for real. He put a stop to that real quick. The 49ers punched the Steelers in Pittsburgh to quiet all naysayers.

San Francisco led 20-7 at halftime and came out, and Christian McCaffrey put the game away with a long touchdown run. The 49ers held Pittsburgh scoreless in the second half.

Buccaneers Stun Vikings

Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were not given much of a shot. The Buccaneers won just eight games last season with Tom Brady, and now he is gone.

This team will be terrible, right? Mayfield wanted none of it. He was sharp and led the Buccaneers’ offense methodically to down the Minnesota Vikings. The loss was awful for the Vikings at home because now they have to take on the Eagles in Philadelphia on a short week.

Dolphins Win Shoot-out over Charges

Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill won the award for best combination in Week One of the season. They connected 11 times for 215 yards and two touchdowns in the 36-34 win over the Chargers. Many projected this game to be a shoot-out, and it was.

The Chargers did what the Chargers do best and lost their chance to pick up a big win. Justin Herbert was solid but got the offense just one passing touchdown in the game.

Rams Upset Seahawks in Seattle

Sean McVay was not listening about how his team was not very talented and inexperienced. He used that group of players missing Cooper Kupp and blasted the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks looked sluggish and unprepared for the first game of the season.

That is a bad sign for Pete Carroll and his troops. The Rams used receiver TuTu Atwell for six receptions and 119 yards in the game.

Cowboys Blank Giants on Sunday Night Football

There is no other team that feels awful about how they performed in front of their home crowd than the New York Giants. The Giants did not score in the 40-0 loss to the Cowboys. New York made a mistake after mistake, and the Cowboys capitalized each time. The Cowboys sacked Daniel Jones seven times in the game and scored each quarter. New York will look to bounce back at Arizona in Week Two.

It will be interesting to see how this turns around or if it does in Week 2. The National Football League will reenter on Thursday as the Minnesota Vikings are on the road at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Can the road team win two straight Thursday Nights? Last week, it was the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs that took the loss. This week, Philadelphia is the home team. Enjoy the season, and best of luck!
