This has been another long year for the Padres, as they are well under .500, and their top players have gone through injuries. Eric Hosmer’s 7-year deal has not looked great for them in year one.
The Diamondbacks on the other hand are atop the NL West after a strong surge these past few weeks. They are listed as favorites tonight. Arizona comes in at -150 over San Diego on Thursday night.

San Diego Padres
Life as a San Diego Padres fan is certainly not a glamorous one. They are sixteen games under .500, are in the midst of a long playoff drought, and can’t seem to put any consistent winning together. Christian Villanueva looks like a promising candidate to win the NL Rookie of the Year award thanks to his tremendous power, but the good news for this team basically stops there. Jose Pirela and Manuel Margot have both failed to hit consistently, as they had been expected to.
Rookie Eric Lauer will take the mound for his fourteenth start of the 2018 season. He has gone 3-5, posting an unimpressive 5.08 ERA in 62 innings of work. He has struck out 54 batters while walking 27. He allowed six runs (three earned) on nine hits in five innings of work against the Pirates in his last start.
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks started the year strong before starting to struggle. Now, they’re back on top and their star Paul Goldschmidt has raised his average up to .274. He is leading the team with 19 HR’s and 48 RBI’s, while David Peralta has continued to show his power, launching 15 home runs. As a team though, they are batting just .229, but their starting pitching has been very good. They have won a number of big games for the DBacks this year. They have a +49-run differential right now, and will need to keep up their pace to end the year atop the West.
Shelby Miller will take the mound for just his third start of the season. He went 3-12 in his first year here, got hurt after 4 starts last year, and has come back horribly, allowing 11 runs (all earned) in eight and two thirds innings. He has an 11-33 over the past four seasons and has some serious improvements to make.
DBacks win their 49th game, knock off the Padres
Listed as the favorites tonight, the Arizona Diamondbacks are ready to take care of business. With Shelby Miller on the mound tonight, they will finally get some good luck from him and see him take a win.
The Padres haven’t been swinging the bat well, and aside from Villanueva’s bower, which has also been faltering of late, they have almost nothing going for them. Their starter for today Eric Lauer also doesn’t do them any justice, with his numbers.
