New York Mets at Washington Nationals Betting Preview

After a mini-hiatus, the Washington Nationals return to action on Tuesday when they host the New York Mets. The Nationals are favored in the game with a money line of -145 while the Mets are underdogs at +130.

The Mets will head to the nation’s capital after a win over the Braves on Monday. However, that win snapped a five-game losing streak for New York.

The Mets have been one of the most disappointing teams in the majors early in the season. In their defense, they’ve played seven games against the Braves, who are likely the second-best team in the National League.

Meanwhile, the Nationals are playing for the first time after having four days off because their weekend series with the Marlins had to be postponed because of Miami’s COVID-19 outbreak. The reigning world champs are just 3-4 on the season, although the Nationals won two in a row against the Blue Jays before their weekend off.

Welcome Back

The time off has allowed the Nationals to reconfigure their rotation, allowing lefty Patrick Corbin to get the start on Tuesday. Corbin was sharp against the Yankees in his first start of the season. He allowed just one run on two hits over 6.1 innings against the Bronx Bombers. Even more impressive, he struck out eight while not issuing any walks. However, it’s now been over a week since he took the mound.

Corbin will face a Mets lineup that has been up and down this season and saw multiple players leave Monday’s game due to minor injuries that may or may not keep them out of Tuesday’s game. For the most part, Corbin has a good track record against New York’s hitters.

However, Michael Conforto is 7 for 19 (.368) with four home runs against Corbin. He’s also one of the hottest hitters on the Mets early in the year. The same is true of J.D. Davis, who has three home runs in 18 at-bats against Corbin.

Robinson Cano, who is hitting .412 at the moment, is one of the players to leave Monday’s game. Also, Pete Alonso is having trouble right now, hitting just .167 on the young season.

Matz and Mets

The Mets will counter Corbin with their lefty, Steven Matz. Over his first two starts of the season, Matz has a 3.18 ERA. However, he’s been hurt by the long ball, giving up three home runs over 11.1 innings. Matz was sharp in his first outing of the season but took the loss last week against Boston.

Matz will face a Washington lineup that will have Juan Soto for the first time this season. Soto will help anchor the lineup with help from Starling Castro, who has started fast this season, hitting .360 over the team’s first seven games.

Castro has also had past success against Matz, going 7 for 23 (.304) against him. Adam Eaton and Trea Turner have also had previous success against Matz, although the New York lefty has a good track record against the rest of Washington’s hitters.

Sluggish Return

As a favorite, the Nationals aren’t a great bet because they are likely to be a little rusty after four days off. With a bit of momentum following a win on Monday, the Mets are worth a shot at +130. Bet on the Mets to win in Washington on Tuesday.
