The Atlanta Braves took game one over the New York Mets on Monday 12-3, but the Mets responded with a 10-2 victory in game two on Tuesday.
The Braves (43-31) have now won 10 out of their last 12 games. They rattled off eight straight wins with a clean three-game sweep over the Miami Marlins, and then a four-game series sweep over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Atlanta was able to take game three against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday 15-1 in order to win the series 2-1. The Braves followed up that 15-run onslaught with another 12 runs against the Mets on Monday before cooling off Tuesday.
It’s no surprise that the Braves sit atop the National League East with a 43-31 record given the production of their offense.
The Mets (35-38), sit 7.5 games behind the Braves for first place but still have the Phillies taking up the second-place spot with a 39-32 record.
Good Wherever They Play
Atlanta is enjoying a 10-game homestretch at Turner Field, as the Braves fair well at home this season with a 23-17 record. The big difference is how well they have been able to play on the road with a 20-14 record. No other team in the NL East has a winning road record, and the Braves are taking full advantage of that so far.
Mike Soroka won his eighth straight decision in Monday’s game one victory over the Mets. Ozzie Albies homered and drove in four runs, as seven combined runs came across to score in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game out of reach.
Not Much Offense
The Mets were only able to put up single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings, as Zach Wheeler (5-5) took the loss for New York. Robinson Cano contributed with a 410-foot homer in the sixth, but the Braves’ offensive firepower was too much for the Mets.
It’s been a rough stretch of games for the Mets, as they have lost six out of their last 11 games. After losing three out of four games against the St. Louis Cardinals in their last series, the Mets’ pitching struggled against the Braves in game one and news doesn’t get any better with Noah Syndergaard dealing with a “low-grade” hamstring strain.
The Mets will just need to continue relying on the bat of Pete Alonso and his team-leading 23 home runs and 57 RBI.
The last time these two teams faced off the series was split at 2-2. The Mets stole the first two games on the road, but the Braves battled back and took the final two games of the April series.
Injury Report
Atlanta has had a relatively healthy season compared to other ballclubs around the league. Pitchers Sean Newcomb, Kevin Gausman, and Darren O’Day continue to miss time with injuries, but Newcomb is listed as day-to-day and should be returning soon. Outfielder Ender Inciarte is still out indefinitely with a back injury.
The two big injuries for the Mets are Syndergaard, who is listed to return in late June, and outfielder Brandon Nimmo with a neck injury.
