On Friday, it was reported that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed a bill that will get the ball rolling for sports betting in the state. The bill passed in Legislature that will partially repeal the prohibition against sports betting in the state, according to an Associated Press article. While the option would most likely help the struggling gambling industry in the state, sports betting is still strongly opposed by the NCAA as well as professional sporting leagues in the US.
The Monmouth Park Racetrack located in Oceanport has already devised plans to begin offering sports betting options by the 26th of October. An independent entity has been set up to help regulate the wagering process for the track, as stated by Dennis Drazin to the AP. In the meantime, the NCAA and the sporting leagues are taking action in court to try and stop the state from offering sports betting options.
Once Christie signed the measure, the state attorney general would withdraw a request for clarification with an injunction preventing sports betting from taking place by a United States District Court judge. Christie signed the bill as he feels it is in accordance to federal law. In response to issues concerning sports betting in the state, Christie had this to say:
“As I’ve said all along, I am a strong proponent of legalized sports wagering in New Jersey. But given earlier decision by federal courts, it was critical that we follow a correct and appropriate path to curtail new court challenges and expensive litigation. I believe we have found that path in this bipartisan legislative effort.”
Also speaking positively of the new legislation, State Senator Raymond Lesniak stated that the measure will help to clear the legal obstacles in the way of sports betting and provide a ‘clear path’ to finally bring the option to the state of New Jersey. Lesniak was a driving force behind the new measure.
