It may not feel like it, but college football season is right around the corner. Obviously, there are some things to be worked out before we begin, but things are on track for football in the fall. Let’s check out the latest news from the college football world.
Six-Week Plan
The NCAA Football Oversight Committee is working on a plan to make sure the season gets started on time. They have proposed a six-week plan that would allow coaches to start working with their players as early as July 6.
Compared to previous years, the plan calls for two weeks for coach-supervised walk-throughs and meetings in which players aren’t allowed to wear helmets or pads. This two-week period would be followed by a traditional four-week preseason camp. The plan isn’t written in stone just yet, but there appears to be widespread agreement among coaches that will help get the college football season started on time.
Out of Here
Nebraska wide receiver JD Spielman left the team in March to seek help for his mental health and officially entered the transfer portal this week. The Cornhuskers were hoping to get him back, but that doesn’t appear to be in the cards anymore.
Spielman is a huge loss on the field, as he ranks third in school history in receiving yards. Without him, Nebraska will have a profound lack of experience at wide receiver in 2020.
Lucky Number 6
Virginia Tech received some excellent news this week when defensive lineman Tyrell Smith was given a sixth year of eligibility. Smith was a team captain in 2019 but played just four games before a patella tendon injury ended his season. His return will give the Hokies some much-needed depth along the defensive line.
Virginia Tech will also have Florida transfer Justus Reed on the defensive line in what will be a seventh season of eligibility after multiple injuries held back his career.
Going to Starkville
Former Alabama athlete Tyrell Shavers announced this week that he’s transferring to Mississippi State. Shavers makes the move as a graduate transfer, meaning he’ll be eligible in 2020, and he will have two years of eligibility left.
Playing time had been in short supply for Shavers at Alabama. However, that figures to change quickly with Mike Leach taking over at Mississippi State and implementing the air-raid offense. Shavers follows Alabama offensive lineman Scott Lashley and Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello in transferring to Mississippi State this offseason.
Immediate Returns
South Florida is another program that received good news this week with running back Darrian Felix being granted immediate eligibility after transferring from Oregon. Felix was not a graduate transfer, so it was expected that he would sit out the 2020 season, although no reason was given for the waiver.
He had just 78 carries in three years at Oregon but should have a better chance of becoming an immediate contributor to the USF backfield. Of course, he’s just the latest transfer that first-year head coach Jeff Scott has added, including South Carolina running back Lavonte Valentine and Alcorn State quarterback Noah Johnson.
