NCAA Basketball News and Notes: Transfer Rule Not Expected To Change

Alabama Crimson Tide vs Missouri Tigers Betting Preview

An important vote regarding immediate transfer eligibility is scheduled for May 20 but is not expected to pass. The NCAA has stated that there are too many obstacles to address before passing the proposed rule change.

The transfer situation in college basketball is often a point of contention among fans and analysts alike. The argument is often that since coaches are allowed to move freely from school to school, players should be afforded the same luxury.

According to Stadium, there are currently 755 transfers that have either chosen their destination or remain in the transfer portal.

The news of the rule likely staying as-is means that we will see an increase in hardship waivers submitted by players, which is always an interesting process. Some schools have been reluctant to submit waivers in the past, but the NCAA has been inconsistent in their rulings, so as a rule, every transfer should submit a request for a waiver.

Forbes Has Long Rebuild Ahead

Newly hired Wake Forest head coach Steve Forbes has a tall order in rebuilding the Demon Deacons. The former East Tennessee State coach was hired late last week by the Deacons only to see three of his best players immediately enter the transfer portal.

Forbes will likely retain the services of Isaiah Mucius, who tweeted he was staying at Wake, while Ismael Massoud and Jahcobi Neath are open to returning. Unfortunately for Forbes, All-ACC third team member Olivier Sarr is likely gone for good.

Forbes was 130-43 in five seasons at ETSU and won the Southern Conference twice. He has a history of pulling recruits from all ranks, including JUCO. It will be interesting to see how he fills out a roster that currently only has two scholarship players on it.

White To Transfer From Arizona State

Arizona State big man Romello White entered the transfer portal late Sunday afternoon, immediately becoming one of the most sought after transfers in the portal. The Georgia native averaged 10 points, nine rebounds, and a block for Bobby Hurley and the Sun Devils last season.

The move is an interesting one because Arizona State is likely a top 25 team heading into the 2020-21 season. White is a native of the Atlanta area and was at one time committed to Georgia Tech, who is currently in need of a big man.

Other programs currently looking for quality big men are Kentucky and Maryland, but overnight, there was a crystal ball prediction logged by a Memphis insider for Vanderbilt, which would be an interesting choice.

White will be heavily sought after along with former Wake Forest big man Olivier Sarr by almost every school in the nation.

Maui Invitational Releases 2021 Field

The Maui Invitational released what teams will be playing in 2021 on Friday, and the field looks to be incredible. Oregon is the headline program while Houston, Saint Mary’s, Butler, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Chaminade, and Notre Dame round out the field.

It is difficult to forecast what the rosters will look like 18 months from now, but there is no denying that the coaching matchups will be intriguing with so many high-level leaders roaming the sidelines.
