NBA Looking To Delay 2020 Draft

Even though the National Basketball Association has yet to make an announcement regarding the 2020 NBA Draft, several league and team officials are confident that it will have to be delayed. The 2020 NBA Draft is scheduled to take place on June 25, but the league will likely still be playing games at that point.

The NBA is planning to resume the season after fear of the coronavirus spreading slows down, or at least have some sort of playoffs to determine an NBA Champion.

Another aspect of delaying the 2020 NBA Draft would also be delaying the pre-draft process. This is conducted while the NBA playoffs are going on each year, and players are given the opportunity to show off their skills for teams.

Players all across the country will attend combines or will go through private workouts with select teams. If the pre-draft process is either shortened or canceled, then teams will likely have to watch video of players instead of working them out on their own.

This will also have a huge impact on the NCAA and their collegiate men’s basketball players. The NCAA has yet to decide if seniors will get another year of eligibility with the canceling of March Madness, but it won’t matter for some of the top players.

Players’ Options Limited

A number of players have already announced their intentions to enter the 2020 NBA Draft, regardless of when that draft is held. Players are finding it hard to sign with an agent during this time as well because most agents are focusing on their current professional players.

Meetings between agents and prospective clients have been canceled as well as the country continues to try to practice social distancing in an effort to slow down the spread of the coronavirus.

The NCAA will also be forced to take a close look at their rules regarding entry into the NBA Draft portal. Currently, players are eligible to enter the draft portal and return to school as long as they don’t sign with an agent. The current deadline for that to take place is June 3, but the NCAA would likely have to change that date if the NBA decides to postpone the draft.

This could leave college coaches all across the country trying to shape their rosters with a lot of unknown and moving parts. Schools are limited to a certain number of scholarship players, although there is hope that the NCAA will change this rule just for the 2020-21 season.

The NBA Combine is held in Chicago each year, and 80 of the top draft prospects are invited to attend. Players go through a series of intense medical tests at the combine, and there are always players that have some red flags in past medical history.

Teams will also be unable to meet with players face to face if there is a delay, which is another key component of the draft process. Several NBA executives have said that they are using this time that the league is shut down to study potential draft picks to have their work done without any distractions of games being played.
