National League Baseball: Chicago Cubs vs. New York Mets

The Chicago Cubs and New York Mets will kick off a three-game series on Monday night at Wrigley Field. This is a rematch of the 2015 National League Championship Series in which the Mets swept the four-game series against the Cubs. Monday night’s game features to be a terrific pitching matchup.

The New York Mets got off to a promising start in 2018, but not much has gone right for them since the month of April. The Mets come into this game with a 58-72 record and are all but eliminated from the playoffs. The Cubs enter this series with a 76-53 record, which is the best mark in the National League. The Chicago Cubs are -135 over the Mets in the series opener.

“Thor” Makes Start For Mets

Noah Syndergaard has had trouble staying healthy in his young career, but when healthy he has been one of the best pitchers in baseball. “Thor” is 9-3 with a 3.38 earned run average through 18 starts in 2018. He has been relatively inconsistent in the month of August but is coming off of a dominating performance against the San Francisco Giants. Syndergaard faces a red-hot Cubs offense in this one.

The New York Mets have had all sorts of problems scoring runs this year, and the team is hitting just .236 as a team. Asdrubal Cabrera has been the most consistent Mets offensive threat this season but doesn’t boast eye-popping stats. Cabrera leads the team with a .277 batting average and just 18 home runs. The Mets will need to find some offense at Wrigley Field this week.

Lester Back To Being Ace

Jon Lester is back to looking like the ace of the Chicago Cubs staff after a brief slump after the All-Star break. Lester has won his previous two starts, giving up just one earned run in 11 ? combined innings. On the season the veteran lefty is 14-5 with a 3.64 earned run average. He faces a weak Mets lineup on Monday night, and should pitch another gem.

The Chicago Cubs offense scored 29 runs in a four-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend. Newly acquired Daniel Murphy has provided a spark at the top of the lineup for the Cubs, while Javier Baez continues his breakout 2018 season. Baez has 28 homers and 97 runs batted in to lead the Cubs, who will be looking for their 6th straight victory.

Cubs Stay Hot, Defeat Mets

The Chicago Cubs were able to score a ton of runs against the Cincinnati Reds this weekend, but face a tough challenge on Monday night. Syndergaard has the type of stuff that can shut down a lineup, and the Cubs have been strikeout prone in 2018. The Mets offense must prove that they can score a few runs against Lester.

The Cubs are in a tight race atop the National League Central Division and need all the wins they can get. Look for the Cubs to stay hot on Monday night and score just enough to get the win. Bet the Chicago Cubs -135 over the Mets in this game.
