MLB News and Notes: 2020 MLB Award Darkhorses

It is finally time to start the season! You have probably put a little money on your team to win the World Series, or played some win totals. Now it is time to see where the value is when betting on players to win the MVP.

This season should have a lot more volatility with only 60 games. Which player can get extremely hot for that amount of time? Someone is going to have some unreal numbers when it is all said and done.

We are going to look for some guys that can get extremely hot for shorter periods of time, but who haven’t been able to put together big seasons yet. You only need to play well for less than half of a regular season to bring home the hardware.

American League MVP

Yoan Moncada (50/1)

Yoan Moncada is coming off a huge 2019 season. The former top prospect is finally showing what all the hype is about. He had a slash line of 315/367/548 last season.

Combine that with a White Sox team that should compete for a division title, and I really like those odds for Moncada.

National League MVP

Nicholas Castellanos (80/1)

Castellanos was absolutely on fire for the Chicago Cubs when he came over in a trade from Detroit at the deadline in 2019. If he hits like that for 60 games, he could get you a great return on investment.

The NL Central should be competitive, and the Reds have a legit shot at winning the division, which would help Castellanos chances.

Cy Young Odds

This is going to be a bizarre season for starting pitchers, as most of them will only get 12 starts. Because of this, I am actually playing more relief pitchers as they could have a bigger impact on the season.

This might be the only time a middle reliever wins the award as they could pile up the wins as starters do not go long into games.

American League

Aroldis Chapman, Liam Henricks (110/1)

Both relievers could end up with 20 saves in only 60 games. Both teams are playoff-caliber. If they end up with 15-plus saves and WHIPs under 1, both players have a chance.

National League

Kyle Hendricks (150/1)

Hendricks has won an ERA crown before. While he won’t put up the gaudy strikeout totals of a DeGrom, he can win eight games and end up with an ERA under 3.00. If the Cubs are going to win the NL Central, they will need Hendricks and Yu Darvish to carry the load. Hendricks with an ROI of 150 on your bet, he is worth a shot.

Edwin Diaz (100/1)

The New York Mets are going to make a run at the NL East. Diaz has a lot of value at 100/1, and with the Mets playing in a lot of close games, he is going to get a lot of chances.

New York’s offense is not going to blow anyone out, so they will win a lot of one-run games, which helps Diaz’s chances.
