After winning the first two games of the series, the Milwaukee Brewers will try to make it three in a row against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. For the first time in the series, the Giants will be favored at home with a moneyline of -160, while Milwaukee’s moneyline is set at +135. There is also an over/under of just 7.5 runs.
With Tuesday’s loss, the Giants have now lost three in a row and four of their last five, which is one of their worst stretches of the season. More importantly, their lead atop the NL West has shrunk to just half a game over the Dodgers. With a loss on Wednesday, San Francisco risks falling out of first place.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee has no such problem with a 10-game lead in the NL Central. The Brew Crew finished August with three straight wins and is now cruising to a division title. In fact, the Brewers are just 3.5 games behind the Giants for the best record in the National League, which now looks attainable for them.
Mr. Anderson
After Milwaukee’s duel aces helped to deliver wins on Monday and Tuesday, Brett Anderson will get his turn on Wednesday. The lefty has gone 4-8 this season over 20 starts but has a solid 4.27 ERA. However, things are trending in the wrong direction, as Anderson has lost three consecutive starts, yielding 12 runs over 12.2 innings during that stretch.
That’s good news for a San Francisco lineup that’s desperate to get back on track. The Giants have scored just three runs total in their last three games while averaging three runs per game over their last 13 games. While there is plenty of power in the San Francisco lineup, Brandon Belt is the only regular with an OPS over .750 during that stretch.
The Gauze Man
The Giants will be grateful to have ace Kevin Gausman on the mound in Wednesday’s game. In 26 starts this season, he’s 12-5 with a 2.49 ERA, putting himself in the middle of the Cy Young race. Plus, there are only two starts this season in which Gausman has been charged with more than three runs.
On the other hand, the Brewers are starting to gain confidence, even if they aren’t the most dynamic lineup in baseball. Christian Yelich is finally coming around, batting .352 with an OPS of .939 during the second half of August. He changes the look of Milwaukee’s lineup, especially with Willy Adames, Avisail Garcia, and Omar Narvaez all having strong campaigns as well.
Breaking the Habit
There’s no doubt that the Brewers have a lot of confidence and momentum after winning the first two games of this series, but that doesn’t mean Anderson can keep it up. Gausman should deliver in San Francisco’s hour of need while the Giants can put together a right-hand heavy lineup to make life difficult for Anderson. That should be enough for the Giants to get a win on Wednesday and snap their losing streak.
