The Southeastern Conference championship games will have a new look this season. The LSU Tigers (9-3) are crashing the party against the Georgia Bulldogs (12-0). It should be a heavy Bulldogs crowd with the game at 4:00 p.m. ET Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
These two teams have not met since 2019, and the Tigers have the last two meetings and four of the last five. First-year coach Brian Kelly has turned the Tigers into an immediate contender, and he’s done it without recruiting players who fit his system.
Georgia is a heavy favorite laying 18 points with an over/under of 51. The Bulldogs are -990 on the moneyline, and LSU is +615.
LSU looking to play spoiler
Longshot College Football Playoff hopes were squashed last week when LSU lost 38-23 to a bad Texas A&M team. But Kelly has surprised people, and his Tigers shouldn’t be counted out.
LSU has proven to be a top-35 team on both sides of the ball. The Tigers gain 433.4 yards of offense per game to rank 34th and are fairly balanced in doing so. They also score 32.5 points per game, ranking 39th. They must do better than their 11 giveaways, which ranks 121st.
Defensively, the Tigers allow 346.8 yards per game (33rdr) and 21.5 points per game (33r4d). They only have six takeaways, ranking 120th.
QB Jayden Daniels has been great, but he is questionable with an ankle injury.
Georgia to secure top seed?
The Bulldogs hope to secure the No. 1 seed in the CFP. The defending national champions had 15 players selected in the 2022 NFL Draft but reloaded and have dominated as they did last year.
Their offense is eighth, gaining 488.8 yards per game and quarterbacked by Stetson Bennett IV. They are scoring 38.3 points per game, which ranks 12th. Somewhat concerning is the nine giveaways, which ranks 98th.
Defensively, Georgia has allowed teams to gain 270.7 yards per game, which ranks fourth and score 11.3 points per game, the best defensive mark in the country. The Bulldogs also have the best rush defense, holding teams to 79.5 rushing yards per game. They only have eight takeaways, though, which ranks 92nd.
Monday, it was announced talented tight end Arik Gilbert was questionable due to undisclosed reasons.
LSU/Georgia Betting Prediction
Public bets show 64% of bets are on LSU to cover the spread and 60% are on the over. It’s hard to say which way the game will go. Georgia could very well blow out LSU, but Kelly has the most talented roster he’s had in a while, even though Notre Dame has multiple CFP and New Year’s Six berths.
LSU is 7-5 against the spread and 6-6 on over/unders this season. Georgia is 6-6 against the spread and 4-7-1 on over/unders this season. It is the largest spread deficit LSU has faced, while Georgia is 2-0 in spreads between 14 and 20.5 points. The Bulldogs are 3-6 on spreads of 21 or more.
