Look Ahead: Games to Watch in Week 1 of College Football Season

As we turn the page beyond the Major League Baseball All-Star Game and we see the sports landscape, it’s time to turn our attention to College Football. The season is projected to be another great one, with several of the top programs in line to compete for a National title. The odds are out for the teams to win it all, and the odds are out for the Week 1 game. Let’s take a look at a few of the best games in Week 1 to look forward to:

Navy Midshipmen vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

This will be on the first day of the season, August 26th. This game will also be played in Ireland. There are high expectations for the Fighting Irish this season. Navy, is a squad that is always tough to take down. They play solid, fundamental football and always seem to be prepared. This is a tough one for Notre Dame to start with. The Fighting Irish are -20 in this one, with a total of 49.5 points. A season ago, the Irish only won by a field goal in a 35-32 game. Keep an eye on the Navy here.

Florida Gators at Utah Utes

A pair of power conference teams getting together right away here. The Gators are not sure of their identity right now, and Utah seems to have some things figured out—Florida from the SEC and Utah from the Pac-12. The Utes are once again going overlooked as USC gets all the talk in their conference. But, quietly, they find ways to win. A season ago, Utah finished in the Top 10 but fell to Penn State in the Rose Bowl. Utah is -8.5 here. Look for Utah to methodically take care of Florida and get a signature win to start the season.

Ohio State Buckeyes at Indiana Hoosiers

One of the more interesting games on the Saturday slate. The Buckeyes go right away with a Big Ten Conference affair. Now, the projections for the Hoosiers are not great, and being a four-touchdown underdog to start the season is not something you wanted. But Indiana is going to get the troops fired up for this one. Do not be surprised if this ends as a competitive football game in Bloomington. Ohio State will need to figure out its quarterback situation and likely won’t be a well-oiled machine just yet.

LSU Tigers at Florida State Seminoles

Two teams are projected to be in the Top 10 to start the season getting together. The Tigers, under Brian Kelly, are trying to patchwork their weaknesses together from a season ago. Florida State is riding high after getting to 10 wins a season ago under Mike Norvell. The Seminoles and Tigers both will have talented offenses. This should be a great football game. The fans in Orlando are in for a treat to start the season. This is a stand-alone game on Sunday night to start the season. Look for a thrilling one, with the local-ish team Florida State coming away with a much-needed Top 10 win.

Clemson Tigers at Duke Blue Devils

If Monday Night Football were a thing in College Football, this one would be the opener. Two Atlantic Coast Conference teams meeting at Brooks Field in Durham. The last time these two teams met, Clemson won big. The Tigers do not have the killer instinct that they have had in the past, so do not be surprised if the Blue Devils make this a tight one. In the end, the program that finds ways to win will do so here. Take Clemson on the road.
