Friday Night Baseball: Los Angeles Angels @ Chicago White Sox

The Los Angeles Angels visit Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, IL, where they will take on the Chicago White Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 central time. Many fans would say that the Angels didn’t show up in the way that people would have expected such a talented roster to do.

Their record stands at 68-72, way below where a team of their caliber should be. They are 19 games out of first place, and are all but eliminated, as they are in fourth place in the American League West division. They are behind the division-leading Houston Astros, the Oakland Athletics, and the Seattle Mariners (Who were once the top team in the division). They will be playing to prepare for another chance at contention next season.

The White Sox, on the other hand, are 56-84, and are also in 4th place, in the American League Central division. They are clearly in rebuild mode, as they controversially are holding back top prospect Eloy Jimenez, likely due to service time concerns. They have young talent on the roster, and have been winning lately, but will likely need to wait until next year to do any sort of contending. This year, however, they will be battling it out for the top draft picks with teams such as the Baltimore Orioles and the Kansas City Royals.

Pitching Matchup

Felix Pena will be on the mound for the Angels. He is 1-4 on the season. His ERA is 4.19 also. He has also struck out 67 on the season. As a young pitcher, Pena will need to remain focused on getting ahead in the count to put away the White Sox hitters, who have shows this season that they can be dangerous. Left-handed power hitters such as Nicky Delmonico and Yoan Moncada will be a huge threat to the young righty.

Lefty Carlos Rodon will be on the mound for the White Sox. He has shown flashes of ace potential, with his slider-fastball-changeup combination. If he can produce some swings and misses like he has been able to lately, he should be able to get a good number of strikeouts facing this lineup. Rodon is 6-4 on the season. Before his recent loss against the Red Sox, he had a five-game winning streak, and a nine-game quality start streak.

Los Angeles Angels

Mike Trout is leading the way for the Angels. He is hitting .305, and has driven in 63 runs. He will be a big factor in this game, as he seems to be in every game. Andrelton Simmons has also been hitting the ball well as well. He is hitting .293, and has driven in 69 runs.

Chicago White Sox

Jose Abreu is the best hitter on the White Sox roster, as he is hitting .272. He has also driven in 78 runs, and has hit 22 home runs.

White Sox Top Angels

The difference in this game is the pitching. Carlos Rodon has been lights out the past couple of months, while Pena has struggled. Rodon should lead the White Sox to a victory in this one. Bet on the Chicago White Sox at -140.
