The Dallas Cowboys take on their NFC East rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, in a key contest on Sunday, with both teams coming into the game tied atop the division standings.
When these teams last got together, Dallas came into the matchup on a three-game losing skid. And once the game got going, it was as one-sided as could be. It ended with a 37-10 win for Dallas on its home field, a game that didn’t get it going but had it dominating for a day. And now, at 7-7, head coach Jason Garrett is facing as much scrutiny as ever, and the division crown on the line, so they have to simply put up or shut up. Will they rise to the occasion?
The Eagles scored 37 points against the Redskins last week despite not having any of their top wideouts, and it was a crucial win against a recently-improved Washington team. If Philadelphia can win Sunday and next week, the division crown is officially theirs, and it would be a third straight postseason trip for Doug Pederson’s squad. Carson Wentz has been able to start every game to date, the first time since his rookie season that he has been able to avoid major injury. We’ll see if he can lead them to a win this time.
The visiting Cowboys are labeled as two-point favorites, while the over/under is set at 46.
Garrett’s Final Stand
A loss for the Cowboys will all but confirm that Jerry Jones will finally bring in a new coach next year, ending Garrett’s time with the Cowboys. All of the talent they have had over the years, and they have never reached the NFC Championship Game with either Tony Romo or Dak Prescott.
The Cowboys have one of the best offensive lines in the history of the game with good wideouts and an elite running back in Ezekiel Elliott. They have playmakers all over the place on defense, and yet something always goes wrong for them. This is Dallas’ chance to try and get back into the playoffs, in a playoff-like environment in Philadelphia.
It is almost embarrassing that the Cowboys are still America’s Team despite the continued struggle in big games. And even if they win and qualify for the postseason, every other team in the pool is a Super Bowl contender, while Dallas would just “be there.” San Francisco, Minnesota or Green Bay would likely overwhelm them.
Wentz Ready To Go
The last two years, these were games that Nick Foles was starting as Wentz was riding the injury report and not a winning streak. Now that Foles is in Jacksonville and Wentz is healthy, he faces the biggest start of his pro career to date.
Wentz will still have a limited array of targets, but if they made it work for the last two weeks, there isn’t a reason that he can’t rise to the occasion again. The Eagles have players that are hungry for success, and this will be a driving force for them Sunday.
Even bringing a little pressure to Prescott in a hostile environment can throw him off his game. Get past the offensive line, and a win they shall have.
