Crosstown Classic: Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs

The Chicago White Sox will travel across town to Wrigley Field this weekend for a series against the Chicago Cubs. This is the first of two series between these two rivals this season. The Cubs will visit the White Sox in late September. The Chicago Cubs took game 1 of this series, 11-2.

The White Sox are in the midst of a complete rebuild, and this season has been rough for the Southsiders. The Sox have lost their last 6 games and are currently in last place in the AL Central Division. The Chicago Cubs have played better of late, and are right in the middle of a tight NL Central Division. The Chicago Cubs are -255 over the White Sox in game 2.

White Sox Need Veterans to Lead

White Sox manager, Rick Renteria has the difficult task of trying to introduce young talent into his everyday lineup. The Sox manager needs his veteran players to help lead the youngsters, but also need them to produce. One of those veterans, James Shields, will be getting the start in this game. Shields is just 1-3 with a 5.41 ERA through 7 starts so far in 2018. If the Sox are going to beat the Cubs in this game, Shield must be effective.

Matt Davidson and Yolmer Sanchez lead the White Sox offensive attack. Matt Davidson has hit 9 home runs and driven in 19 runs, both teams highs. Sanchez leads the team in both hits (38) and batting average (.302). The White Sox come into this series ranked second to last in runs scored with 136. The Sox will face a tough Chicago Cubs pitching staff this weekend at Wrigley Field.

Offensive Consistency Key for Cubs

The Cubs are capable of scoring a ton of runs, but they have been incredibly inconsistent so far in 2018. Javier Baez has been the most consistent Cubs hitter to this point and leads the Cubs in home runs and runs batted in. Anthony Rizzo got off to a very slow start, but has showed signs of turning his season around. The Cubs will look to make life miserable for James Shields.

Veteran Jon Lester will be on the mound for the Cubs in game 2. Lester is just 3-2, but sports a very impressive 2.82 ERA. The Cubs pitching staff has been their strength so far in 2018, and Lester will look to continue his strong season. If Lester can get the ball to the bullpen with a lead, the Cubs’ relievers should finish the game.

Lester Looks Sharp, Cubs Win

This rivalry always seems to produce memorable moments, and this series should be no different. The Cubs took game 1, so the White Sox will be looking to get them back in game 2. The White Sox need a quality start from their veteran leader, James Shields. If Shields is able to pitch deep in the game, the Sox have a chance.

It appears that the Cubs’ offense is beginning to round into form. Anthony Rizzo has had a huge beginning of May, and the Cubs will take advantage of the warm weather at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are simply just a much better team than the White Sox and should handle them all weekend long. Bet the Chicago Cubs -255 over the White Sox in game 2.
