The Colorado Rockies and Milwaukee Brewers continue their weekend series with a primetime game on Saturday night. After taking the first game of the series on Friday, the Brewers are heavy favorites on Saturday with a moneyline of -275 compared to Colorado’s moneyline of +225. The game also has an over/under of 7.5 runs.
The Brewers will be grateful to have won on Friday to start the second half of the season. Milwaukee entered the all-star break on a three-game losing streak and a stretch of 3-8. But with Friday’s win, the Brewers were able to extend their lead atop the NL Central to 1.5 games over the Cardinals.
The Rockies, meanwhile, have had a surprisingly good month of July. Colorado won five of six heading into the all-star break and is now 10-8 in July despite Friday’s loss. While the Rockies are eight games under .500, they are just 6.5 games out of a Wild Card spot, so hope lingers if they can get themselves going.
Rocky Mountain High
Jose Urena will get the nod for the Rockies on Saturday night. Ironically, he began the season in Milwaukee but was designated for assignment in May, only to make three starts for the Rockies after Colorado gave him a chance.
Urena has been outstanding in those there starts, scattering 17 hits and eight walks over 18.2 innings but allowing just three runs for an ERA of 1.45 across those three starts.
Offensively, the Rockies haven’t been as good this year away from Coors Field, averaging just 3.25 runs per game during their eight road games in July. C.J. Cron and Charlie Blackmon have both had productive campaigns, although they are the only two Rockies with at least ten homers this year.
On the bright side, Kris Bryant is finally heating up lately, while Blackmon, Cron, and Jose Iglesias have also been productive throughout July.
Hitting Wood
Brandon Woodruff will get the start for the Brew Crew on Saturday night to get the second half of his season underway. He made 13 starts during the first half of the season, going 7-3 with a 3.93 ERA while striking out 84 batters in 66.1 innings.
Woodruff missed most of June with an ankle injury but has made four starts since returning from the IL, allowing just six runs on 17 hits over 22.2 innings across those four starts.
Of course, offensive inconsistency continues to plague the Brewers, who scored six runs in Friday’s win but have scored three runs or less in seven of their last 14 games.
None of the team’s regular starters has an OPS over .800, so Milwaukee is lacking impact offensive players. Fortunately, Willy Adames and Andrew McCutcheon have come on strong in July, although the team’s infielders outside of Adames continue to struggle.
Wait and See
Even with a win on Friday, the Brewers are yet to prove that they are past their struggles from right before the all-star break. Urena has also pitched well enough lately to keep Milwaukee’s lineup under wraps.
Despite the long odds, take a chance on the Rockies winning on Saturday, as Colorado holds a lot of value in this game.
