Justyn Ross, who is expected to be a first-round pick in next year’s NFL draft, will have shoulder surgery. The injury appeared during the team’s spring workouts.
The 6’4″ Ross led the Tigers with 66 catches for 864 yards and eight touchdowns. Ross also had 1,000 yards receiving in his freshman season, including a 74-yard touchdown in the national title game against Alabama.
Ohio State Could Play in Front of 20% to 30% of Crowd
Gene Smith, Ohio State’s Athletic Director, said that the university is coming up with plans to play in front of 20,000 to 30,000 people. Ohio Stadium, otherwise known as “The Shoe”, holds 105,000 people.
The stadium is the fourth largest on-campus stadium in the nation. Face masks and other precautions would be taken, but they believe the limited seating will allow for social distancing.
Athletes Starting to be Allowed Back on Campus
Several universities and conferences have announced that players will be allowed to come back in June. The SEC has announced that athletes can come back on June 8th.
This will cover voluntary on-campus workouts for a number of different sports. Each university will do so at their own discretion and have to come up with policies and procedures to keep student-athletes safe.
The NCAA board voted to end the moratorium on athletes on campus starting May 31st. It is now up to conferences and individual universities to decide what is best for them individually.
Council Loosens Scheduling Restrictions for 2020
The NCAA has decided to loosen football scheduling parameters to account for what could be a number of replacement games due to the coronavirus pandemic. On top of allowing athletes to come back to campus, they also passed a waiver allowing schools the opportunity to reschedule if some schools decide to not play football in the fall.
The waiver allows a team to now play more of their games against FCS opponents should it be necessary. Schools are now required to play only 60% of their schedule against FBS opponents. While hopefully this requirement doesn’t come into play but if whole conferences decide to skip the season this will help a team fill out their schedule.
Who Will Be the First College Athlete To Cash In?
Caleb Williams, the top-ranked quarterback in the 2021 class, could be that person. The Washington, D.C. native is the number three overall player in the class, according to Rivals.com.
Oklahoma, LSU, and Maryland have all made offers to Williams. He could be the prime example of a student-athlete being able to profit off his likeness wherever he goes.
The decision boils down to whether he wants to make more money at the bigger programs (LSU or Oklahoma) or stay closer to home (Maryland).
