The Toronto Blue Jays scratched out a tight 2-1 over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night to open up a four-game series. The two teams meet again on Tuesday with the Blue Jays slight home favorites with a moneyline of -125 while Chicago’s moneyline is listed at +105. The game also has an over/under of nine runs.
At this point in the season, the Blue Jays need all of the wins they can get. They had lost seven of their last nine games before winning on Monday. That stretch has dropped them 11 games out of first place in the AL East and 4.5 games out of a Wild Card spot with three teams to leapfrog to get there.
Meanwhile, the White Sox are playing pressure-free baseball these days. Even after Monday’s loss, Chicago holds a comfortable nine-game lead at the top of the AL Central standings. However, the White Sox have lost three in a row and are 5-8 over their last 13 games, so they’ve become a little too complacent and fallen into a rough stretch.
Cease the Losing
Dylan Cease will get the start on Tuesday, hoping to snap Chicago’s losing streak. It’s been another solid for the 25-year-old, who is 9-6 with a 4.06 ERA over 25 starts. However, Cease has been solid but unspectacular lately, allowing three runs in three consecutive starts with his control starting to wane.
However, he might be getting the powerful Toronto lineup at the right time. The Blue Jays have scored just nine total runs over their last four games, falling into a team-wide slump. Of course, with five players who have hit at least 20 home runs this season, the Blue jays could wake up at any time, as they’ve hit eight home runs in their last six games despite the recent slump.
The New Ace?
On Tuesday, Jose Berrios will make his fifth start since being traded to the Blue Jays at the trade deadline. His first two starts were brilliant, but Berrios has had some issues in his past two starts, giving up eight earned runs over 9.1 innings. He also took a loss when he faced the White Sox in July before the trade, yielding three home runs and giving up five runs over six innings.
Of course, the White Sox lineup isn’t exactly clicking at the moment, averaging just 3.2 runs per game over their last six games. Chicago is close to full strength, which hasn’t been the case for most of the season, so the White Sox should be coming on strong offensively. However, everyone but Yoan Moncada seems to be falling into a slump over the past week.
Too Good to Continue
The White Sox are too good to continue their losing streak, especially since Toronto hasn’t played consistent baseball lately either. Chicago’s experience facing Berrios this season should play to their advantage as well. Most importantly, the White Sox have more value in this game as the underdog, so bet on the White Sox to get a win on Tuesday.
