Lester Throwing for Cubs

Veteran ace Jon Lester will take the mound against the division rival Milwaukee Brewers. Epstein has taken the Red Sox version of the National League and propelled them past the Yankees version of the National League (see St/ Louis Cardinals baseball) using his old playbook, sign everyone.

The departure of a declining Jake Arietta was immediately met with the signing of talented starter Yu Darvish and what is even more startling than the Cubs newfound willingness to grab talent by the bunches, is the Cubs producing budding superstars one after another from the farm system.

To have the most talented corner duo in baseball, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, come from your farm system is unbelievable. Then add in Wilson Contreras, Javier Baez, Kyle Schwarber, and now Ian Happ, and you have other GM’s around the league shaking their heads.

The Chicago Cubs probably keep opposing pitchers up the night before starts with a lineup that boasts BIG power from the top to the bottom. Their rotation of Lester, Darvish, Quintana, Hendricks, and Chatwood rounds out arguably one of the best teams to ever take the diamond.

Perhaps the only thing that can really get in the Cubs way are themselves. Yet, the Cardinals and the Brewers did not sit idly by in the offseason and both have rosters built to compete with the new kings of the NL Central.

Brewers Seeking Bounce Back

Brent Suter will take the mound for the Brewers hoping to recapture the magic of his first start against the Chicago Cubs when he shut them out for seven innings for the win on July 28th, 2017. He only allowed a run in 5.1 innings when he faced them again in September.

As a starter he managed the powerful lineup of the cubs as well as any pitcher in the majors in his two starts. As a reliever he gave up 4 runs in 1.1 innings of work to the division rival. Milwaukee hope he can keep his streak of good starts going against the team they will likely need to get past to secure a division title.

The Milwaukee Brewers were a young and talented team going into the 2017 team that no one really expected to come on line as a contender for a couple of more years. The Brewers showed everyone the time is now with an 86 win season, barely missing the postseason.

Despite the surprising success of the 2017 team, the Brewers brass pulled the trigger on bringing in two great players in Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain. The addition of these two premium hitters makes the Brewers already good lineup one of the best in baseball.

Brewers Win at Home

If the Brewers can contend until they get their young ace, Jimmy Nelson, back after the all-star the NL Central could get real interesting. Look for the offense of the Brewers to win this game. We like the Brewers 8-6 over the Cubs. Bet the home team!
