Big 12 Football: Kansas State Wildcats at West Virginia Mountaineers

These two teams have looked like exact opposites thus far this year, with one offense struggling to produce, while the other has been lights out and dominating their opponents.

It is very likely that the matchup ends up going something like that, but these matchups are played to see how even the teams really are, anyway.

Kansas State Wildcats

A 2-1 start for the Wildcats is ok, but they are probably wishing they are 3-0 right now. They have not gotten much efficiency from the QB spot, with Skylar Thompson completing 28 of 49 passes for 4 TD’s and 1 INT, through three weeks, for 360 yards. They need more than that from him, and backup Alex Delton, who is 8-19, for 177 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INT’s.

Alex Barnes though, has been a terrific running back, with 228 yards and a TD, while Skylar Thompson has also shown that he has WHEELS. Isaiah Zuber has been far and away the team’s top WR, and this is something unlikely to change.

They’ve got just two sacks in three games, as they have failed to put a ton of pressure on opposing QB’s. This is something they will have to correct to have a chance. They’ve got to put Will Grier on the ground and make him uncomfortable early. As you’ll see below, Grier has been a beast this year and hasn’t been stopped in the team’s first few games.

West Virginia Mountaineers

So far so good for the Mountaineers, winners of their first two games, and second in the Big 12. Will Grier has completed 46 of 60 passes for 761 yards, 9 TD’s, and just 1 INT. The run game hasn’t really gotten going from any-one back in particular, but as a committee, is very strong. Kicker Evan Staley has been perfect when called upon, just what they need when certain drives end up stalling out.

Like their opponents, West Virginia also has just two sacks this year. They have not put a ton of pressure on opposing QB’s, and is something they could sure use some work on. With Will Grier at the helm, they have a tremendous advantage over the Wildcats.

West Virginia stays perfect, drop K. State to .500

Yeah, this one will not be that close. Grier is going to have another major performance, while Skylar Thompson, completing just nine passes per game, will do most of his damage on the ground.

As we saw last night in the Illinois-Penn State game, which ended up being a fourth-quarter ROUT, it takes a solid passing game to beat the best teams in the nation. There’s the issue for K. State.
