AL vs. NL: Boston Red Sox vs. Atlanta Braves

In a battle of the first places teams in the respective East divisions, this series promises to be a lot of fun. The Red Sox still haven’t slowed down yet, while the Braves attempt to hold off the Phillies.

This is a series that will show how legit the Red Sox can still be come September, just five wins away from 100 for the season.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox are still 49 games over .500, and a legit force to be reckoned with. An offense led by JD Martinez and Mookie Betts, who have been almost impossible to slow down, has done a tremendous job for them. Andrew Benintendi has quietly been having a very good season for the team, while Mitch Moreland has been very good. It’s one of the main reasons they cut Hanley earlier this year.

The starting rotation has gotten the job done well, and even though Chris Sale has missed a lot of the time, the team has not skipped a beat. All of their acquisitions at the trade deadline have really been paying off for them.

They will send Rick Porcello to the mound for his 29th start of the season. He has posted a 15-7 record, with a 4.27 ERA in 168 2/3 innings of work. He has struck out 171 batters, while walking 42. He has allowed three or more runs in each of his past three starts, and will need to improve tonight.

Atlanta Braves

What a season it has been for Nick Markakis, the unofficial leader of the Braves. He’s been around this game for thirteen years, and this is the first time that voters found his numbers to be impressive enough to vote him in. Ronald Acuna Jr. looks like the NL ROTY, while Freddie Freeman has also been coming up big. Johan Camargo has quietly had an impressive season for the Braves, who have really extended their division lead on the Phillies. They’ve outscored opponents by an impressive 97 runs, en route to their 76-61 start.

They will send Sean Newcomb to the mound for his 27th start of the season. He has posted an 11-7 record, with a 3.85 ERA in 145 innings of work. He has struck out twice as many batters (138) as he’s walked (69). He was not on his A-game his last time out against the Rays, allowing six runs on eight hits over four innings. The seven strikeouts were a nice touch but did not help him much.

Red Sox earn their 96th win

Another day, another Red Sox win. Rick Porcello will earn his sixteenth win of the year with six strong innings of work. The Red Sox offense is also going to come through big.

The 40th home run of the season from JD Martinez, and a three-hit night from Mookie Betts will drive the team to victory.
