The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is popular for its Circuit events that normally take place every year in different land-based poker rooms throughout the US. However, this time, the Circuit events were scheduled to take place online due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This in itself is an unprecedented situation and the WSOP organizers are adjusting as best they can.
The WSOP organizers plan to host a total of 13 online series in 2021. Each series will take place once a month, and there will be one additional championship event. Moreover, a total of 180 WSOP gold rings will be distributed to players who win the respective ring events throughout the year.
The first month of the year is already over, which means that the first circuit series is over — the WSOP Circuit January Super Series. A total of 8,653 entrants were recorded, and $3,080,707 was awarded in online prizes throughout 18 events.
Some of the notable players who managed to receive a WSOP ring were Toby Lewis, Daniel Lupo, Katie Stone, Alexander Butcher, Jasthi Kumar, and Chris Moorman.
Event #14: $75,000 NLH 2x Re-Entry was particularly interesting. It is the one where Chris Moorman managed to win a gold ring, but the way he did it was somewhat interesting, as his heads-up opponent actually turned out to be no one else but his wife Katie “katelin” Lindsay. Moorman managed to win $19,510, whereas his wife received the consolation prize of $14,443. Still, Moorman was the one to receive a gold ring.
The Player of the Month leaderboard is currently topped by Daniel Buzon, who has 88.84 points at the moment. This means he was automatically awarded a spot for the $250,000 WSOP Online Circuit Championship, which will take place later in 2021.
The Main Event Overview
The pinnacle of the series was the $525 buy-in Main Event, which started on Sunday, January 31. The tournament saw a total of 583 players and 310 re-entries. The original guaranteed prize was $250,000, but the final prize pool turned out to be $446,500, and it was split among the top 120 finishers.
Some of the players who managed to make it to the money were James Carroll, Harrison Dobin, John Allan Hinds, William Covino, Kevin Garosshen, Daniel Buzogn, Conrad Simpson, and more.
After exactly 11 hours of intense poker action, AJ Basselini-Tuisi, nicknamed “jnja1719,” managed to top the event, winning the lion’s share of the prize pool — a total of $67,376.85.
His final opponent was Ian Kurzer, who received the consolation prize of $49,918.70. Other players who made it to the final table of the Main Event were William Romaine, Angel Lopez, Doug Kurth, Michael Bohmerwald, Frank Marasco, Kyle Draucker, and Justin Young.
This wrapped up the start of the first-ever online version of the World Series of Poker circuit. There are still 12 more events to go. Judging by the start, this will definitely be a great year for Circuit, as there are plenty of players interested in taking part in the online format of the game. Which likely highlights the possibility of online availability opening up the field to a wider variety of contestants.
