WPT500 Took Place Online — Fabio Sperling Wins First Prize

It’s safe to say that poker is alive and well, despite the fact that there’s a shortage of live poker events due to the coronavirus. Most of these live events actually migrated to some of the online poker platforms, allowing poker lovers to take part in their favorite tournaments on the web. One such event is the popular WPT500, which usually attracts a massive live field.

Its organizers decided to offer WPT500 via partypoker, making it officially the first-ever event of its kind. They didn’t have to worry about attracting players to the event, as a total of 4,828 entries were recorded. As a result, players had an opportunity to win a piece of the $2,400,000 prize pool.

The player that managed to take the biggest piece of the cake was Fabio Sperling, who won a total of $281,125. The player from the UK ended up making a four-way deal with the other three remaining players.

There are three flagship events that are part of the WPT Online Series that takes place on partypoker, and WPT500 was just the first one. The series will run until May 31 and all guarantees will be double. The two big remaining events are WPT Online Championship and WPT DeepStacks, and there will also be several smaller events.

The Final Table Action

A total of nine players were ready to return to the final table. The player that had to leave the game first was Fabrizio Gonzales, who ended up ninth, according to a report released by WPT.

Gonzales was not the only victim of the three-way situation that made him hit the rail. In fact, Giuseppe Vassallo also almost lost all of his chips and was left with an ante for the next hand. That made him the next one to hit the rail as the eight-placed player. Vassallo earned $23,174 for his effort.

The next one in line was Daan Mulders, who had a pretty good run as the chip leader at the start of the day. But, he couldn’t keep up with the pace to make it to the end, so he had to settle for the seventh place and the prize of $35,799.

The player that followed was an Armenian poker-lover, Arutyun Saakyn, who earned a total of $50,887 for his effort. After him, it was time for Philipp Dietrich to hit the rail, winning a total of $74,785.

The four remaining players saw it somewhat futile to continue fighting for the main prize, so they decided to make a four-way deal. Christopher Putz from Austria ended up fourth and won $187,289, and the third position was occupied by his fellow countryman Markus Prinz, who won $202,012.

Walter Treccarichi from Malta came in as runner-up, winning a total of $235,666 as a result of the deal. However, it was Sperling who had the opportunity to celebrate the victory in the WPT500.
