On Wednesday, state gaming regulators in Nevada handed South Point, the Las Vegas Casino owned by Michael Gaughan, the approval to operate a website for online poker within the state of Nevada. The casino could be ready to offer online poker as soon as this fall, if all goes well.
Steve Harris, the attorney for South Point, spoke with the Gaming Control Board and stated that the technology the casino will use for an online poker site is in the advanced stages of approval by an independent testing laboratory. Gaming regulators hired the laboratory to test the gaming option.
Harris went on to state that if the conditions are met then the website created by South Point could be up and running by this October. However, the site will not go live until the stipulations placed by the control board have been met. The board wants to make sure the site meets all of the state requirements before it goes live with real money wagering.
The state’s gaming regulators have approved equipment manufactures to provide the technology needed to provide the online gaming options. Three manufactures have been approved for this option. Over thirty six casino operators as well as gaming equipment manufacturers have applied for the online gaming licenses in the state of Nevada and as of right now, it seems as though South Point will be the first to offer the online options in the state.
South Point awaits their approval by the Nevada Gaming Commission on August 23rd and if they are approved, they will be the first casino operator to be licensed in the state. Many gambling analysts are concerned as to how well online poker will do in the state because Nevada does not have a large population. It will be interesting to see this fall, if the South Point site is allowed to launch, how many players actually visit and play the online gambling options.
