A recent article by the Huffington Post has many players and fans in the poker community talking. The article featured information about a new aesthetic medicine option for poker players called Pokertox. This new option is supposed to help poker players have an enhanced poker face during game play. The new Botox option has been introduced by Dr. Jack Berdy, an aesthetic medicine professional in New York.
The new service is supposed to help poker players hide ay signs of facial emotion. Pokertox is a program that was designed to help players keep their facial expressions under control so they can hide whether they have a bad hand or great hand. Berdy stated in the article that the process will require players to meet with him for a consultation. The consultation will involve players speaking about their poker ‘tells’, which are the unconscious signals that players show when playing the game. Berdy commented in the article: “Some people might get a card they like or don’t like and raise their eyebrows. If that’s the common reaction, we can put Botox in certain areas to minimize them.”
‘Tells’ might include facial expressions such as squinting or curling of the lip corners. Berdy says he can place Botox in these areas so they player will be able to alleviate their ‘tell’. Berdy went on to state in the article that he created Pokertox to be able to combine his occupation with his love of gambling. Berdy is hoping to be able to offer this service and expand his business. If the process works, players would have to come back every few months to have additional Botox injections in the problem areas.
However, as of right now, Berdy has not seen any players sign up for the service. Berdy has only been offering the new Pokertox option for one week and many players in the industry are skeptical. Josh Hale, a player who has competed in the WPT, spoke with the Huffington Post and was quoted as stated: “The game has moved on from bluffs, and is more analytical these days. Players might look at physical tells, but they are relying more on betting patterns and bet sizing.”
It will be interesting to see if players will take advantage of this service or pass. Berdy is open to helping players so only time will tell if players will begin setting up appointments for this new service.
