The event saw 253,698 players competing in the micro-roller event. The tournament may not have been massive in regards to the buy-in or prize money up for grabs, but the overall field of competitors was quite impressive.
The low buy-in was the kicker to drawing in the number of players to the event. Costing only one cent, the event was quite affordable. The event had a nice guarantee of $100,000, so how could you not pay the penny buy-in to compete? Because the buy-in was so low, PokerStars had to come up with over $97,000 due to the overlay. The low buy-in combined with over 500 tickets being passed out to the event, which were given at random.
In the end, it was online poker player ‘DaDumon’ who earned the first place prize of $10,000, with more than 26,000 players earning a cash prize. The Common Cents tournament broke the record, set by PokerStars in 2013, when 225,000 players competed in the celebration of 100 billion hands.
Because of the early success of the Common Cents festival, it seems as though this could be a recurring option at the site. During the first run of the tournament series, players can compete in 14 events which have escalating buy-ins as the series continues. Each day of the series, two events take place with the penny tournament offering the largest prize pool. The main event buy-in is only 99 cents and has a guaranteed prize pool of $25,000.
