Poker and Fathers Day: Stroke-Hit Jerry Cada Supported by His Son in WSOP

Fathers Day is a very important holiday when we express our gratitude to our fathers and show them our attention in one way or another. It is a day when we do our best to make our fathers feel the best and feel proud of us. Furthermore, it is a day when we show how proud we are of our fathers and why they are important figures in our lives. One such story also included the professional poker player Joe Cada and his father Jerry Cada.

However, the World Series of Poker gold bracelet was won by a much younger player and a four-time bracelet winner Brian Rast, who managed to get as much as $259,670 and was better than a total of 95 entrants. Brunson ended up on the 6th place with a prize share of $43,963.

Although he won this event, Rast is still young and he has a lot of work to do before he can come close to the achievements of Doyle Brunson. Although the “Texas Dolly” stands for one of the best of all time, Rast has theoretical chance to maybe even beat his record as he is currently on the similar path as Brunson was in his age. Namely, Rast is only 36 and has four bracelets. Furthermore, he has also won two Poker Players Championships and manage to create quite an impressive Poker resume.

Both of the players agree on the fact that consistency and devotion are what counts in the end in this game and that the bracelets and money are not the main goals. Rast stated that his current main goal is to play as long as he can and become a legendary poker player just as one of his idols – Doyle Brunson, who has been actively playing poker for more than 60 years.

Rast is aware that he participated in one of the touching moments in the history of professional poker, as the sole fact of Brunson entering a tournament for one last time was sensitive enough for many poker fans.
This being said, it is important to stress out that Brunson did not go out without a fight and the suspense and uncertainty were felt most of the time during the last day. At one point, he was on the third place when it comes to the number of chips, but Rast and Dario Sammartino started playing more aggressively and gained a complete command over the game. Brunson ended on a 6th place and was outdrawn by James Alexander.

The remaining of the evening saw Rast and Sammartino standing out in comparison to the other players, but in the end, it was Rast who managed to win the bracelet.

Tuesday night was really a night to remember as it symbolically portrayed one of the living legends paving the way for one of the players who are yet to become a legend.

Jerry lived a life of an engineer before his life was completely turned around by a sudden stroke. This left him in a wheelchair with the most of his motor functions disabled. Listening to the doctor’s advice that Jerry needs something to focus on in order to recover well from the stroke, Joe started teaching him to play poker. This resulted in Jerry entering two professional tournaments, one being held a Seniors Championship couple of days ago, and the other being a WSOP event in Rio called $1,000 Super Seniors Championship that, as it happens, was on the Fathers Day.

Joe stated that his father Jerry has come a long way and that his recovery is going very well. As a matter of fact, he really enjoys playing this game. Joe is a very good teacher indeed as he is mostly known for winning the 2009 World Series of Poker main event. He stated that his father had been in a coma for more than a month and that it was a huge relief for him to see him wake up and even start playing poker.

The love that Joe Cada has for his father was seen in the event where Jerry received constant support. Joe read the community cards for Jerry, pushed his wheelchair, and supported him all the way through the tournament. It was a really heartwarming moment which shows the through bonding between a father and a son.

Joe stated also that the whole recovery process was definitely a difficult time that requires a lot of time and devotion. However, his love of poker was something that helped him reach his father and help him a lot. This shows that poker is not a game where only bluff is appreciated as well as money. On the contrary, poker is a game that father and sons can play and share perfect moments together.

Joe Cada added that he was really proud of his father and that he could not have been happier with his recovery.
The game of poker has many stories like these and this is exactly why this game is slowly losing the negative stigma worldwide and being slowly accepted as a game of skill, patience, and character as well as the game of luck. Looking in the near future, the poker may even be accepted in most of the countries as one of the official sports. Who knows?
