Player Traffic Numbers Low in Delaware

The state of Delaware was the second in the United States to launch online gambling options and the first to allow for more than just online poker. The state silently entered the market, as many were first focused on Nevada and then New Jersey, which should be launching towards the end of the month. Delaware first launched on October 31^st for the testing phase and by last Friday, the site was live and in full swing.

One would think that with the full launch, players would be logging on in nice numbers, but this is not the case. The site has shown minimal traffic, with only 36 players in cash game play at the peak times according to reports at Poker Scout. The state knew that they would have small numbers in the player pool as the population is quite small when compared to other states, with just under 1 million residents. This is why discussions had already taken place in which the state would work with Nevada or New Jersey to create interstate gaming options.

According to a recent article by PokerNewsReport, the reason the traffic numbers are low may be due to the fact that players have geolocation issues. In the past, geolocation has been a major problem in Nevada and it appears as though Delaware is suffering the same fate. PokerNewsReport found that several residents of Delaware logged on to TwoPlusTwo to report their experience.

According to these posts, the players were having difficulty signing up to compete as their whereabouts were not properly tracked. The players were within the state’s borders but the cellular network, Verizon, was showing the IP address as in another state, Pennsylvania.

The state is now working with Verizon to remedy the problem. We shall see if the player numbers increase once the geolocation issue is repaired. On a side note, Geolocation issues took place with both WSOP.com and Ultimate Poker so it makes one wonder if every state is going to have some type of issue with the geolocation service which is required to keep game play within state borders.
