According to several reports, the state of Pennsylvania is moving forward to study online gaming to be able to stay in step with neighboring states in the gambling industry. Joseph Scarnati is the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and has called for a formal study of online gambling for the state of Pennsylvania. Scarnati would like to see how the twelve casinos in the state could become involved in the market and would like the information by next spring.
The state budget is being reviewed for the spring meeting and Scarnati would like to see if online gambling would be a viable option for additional casino revenues. If the study is conducted, it would be completed in time for legislators to make changes to existing legislation.
The study is to include online gambling as well as regulations and state taxes for the dozen casinos in the state. The resolution made by Scarnati was approved unanimously by the Senate Community Economic and Recreational Development Committee. The study is to be conducted by the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee but the resolution must be passed by the full senate for the survey to take place.
Scarnati stated: “With New Jersey doing internet gaming and I believe the main intent was to get customers back from Pennsylvania, we need to be a bit more aware of where we want to head with gaming. And what we want to do is keep those customers.”
The new Senate Resolution 273 could eventually mean the creation of online gambling in the state. The gambling industry has done well in Pennsylvania since its inception in 2006. Almost $14 billion has been created in the state and with online gambling, the state could succeed even more. It will be interesting to see if the state decides to move forward in 2014 after the study is completed.
