Online WSOP Main Event Breaks Guinness World Record

The first online version of the World Series of Poker Main Event took place more than a month ago, and the result was better than anyone could have expected. The main event became one of the largest events of such kind in the history of online poker.

Recently, official confirmation came from Guinness World Records, which announced that the prize pool of $27,559,500 had received the title for the “Largest Prize Pool for an Online Poker Tournament.” The online WSOP Main Event attracted a total of 5,802 entrants who participated in increasing the guaranteed prize by paying the $5,000 buy-in fee.

Steve Preiss, GGPoker’s Head of Poker Operations, stated that the title had been “on (our) radar” from the very start. He added that both players and poker fans expected record-breaking prizes when GGPoker hosted online WSOP and that the platform managed to deliver results. The confirmation from the Guinness World Records only made this record more important.

Negreanu the One to Deliver the News

Michael Empric is the official adjudicator for the Guinness World Records. He was the one to contact Daniel Negreanu to tell him that the world record had been confirmed. Negreanu is an official ambassador for GGPoker.

“Kid Poker” couldn’t hide his happiness about this, stating that it was awesome and “totally amazing” that the Guinness World Records verified the record set by the WSOP Main Event. Negreanu also thanked the organization, as well as all the players who took part in the WSOP in 2020 who contributed to breaking the record. He concluded that it was an honor to receive such recognition.

Empric stated that the Guinness World Records always looked for “new, incredible, and record-breaking achievements.” He also added that the organization received and reviewed GGPoker’s application for the largest prize pool for an online poker tournament.

According to Empric, after reviewing the evidence and going through details, the organization official decided that the prize pool of $27,559,500 officially “shattered” the Guinness World Records Title. Finally, Empric congratulated Daniel Negreanu and the entire organization for this achievement.

Main Event Recap

The Online World Series of Poker Main Event was the highlight of a 54-event festival that took place on GGPoker, with each of the event featuring gold bracelets for the winners.

A total of 5,802 entrants were recorded, and the one topping the event was Stoyan Madanzhiev from Bulgaria, who won a total of $3,904,685. The Bulgarian officially became the first-ever player to win the online version of the WSOP Main Event and become a champion.

The amount of money Madanzhiev received also became a new record — the largest amount of money won in a single online poker tournament. However, Guinness World Records will have to verify and approve this as well.

The tournament lasted for 150 hours, 9 minutes, and 13 seconds, and the total number of players that got paid was 728, with the minimum cash being $11,184.
