To try and stop the online gambling movement in the United States, Las Vegas Sands Corp CEO Sheldon Adelson, created the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling. The CSIG has tried everything they can think of to get legislators to ban online gaming, even proposing legislation at both the state and federal level. However, despite their efforts, the interest is still there among individual states and now a new organization has been created that will counteract the CSIG’s efforts.
According to a recent Politico report, the new organization is titled The Coalition for Consumer and Online Protection, CCOP for short. The group is led by Mary Bono and Mike Oxley, both members of Congress. Oxley being a republican of Ohio and Bono a republican of California, will both lead the group to protect consumers from unregulated online gaming as well as to try and stop any plans for online gambling prohibition.
The CCOP’s stance is that technology and regulation can be used to protect consumers rather than outlaw the activity which is already enjoyed. The result of prohibition would be an increased risk for consumers who take to the black market to participate in igaming.
Oxley was quoted as stating that millions of American citizens currently enjoy the activity and a congressional ban would essentially ensure that the players are taking part in an unsafe black market where strong consumer protections are not in place, but are what Americans deserve.
Bono held up this point by stating that Congress cannot ‘legislate the internet away’ or take away the consumer demand for online products. Bono stated that legislators need to make the internet a safe place for business, consumers as well as families and children.
The Coalition for Consumer and Online Protection will be making efforts to educate the public on how a regulated internet gaming market has its advantages as well as work to neutralize the effort of those who are opposed to the option.
