As the online gaming industry is constantly under discussion in the United States, a new group is working to make sure that the opportunity is available for both players and operators. The Coalition for Consumer and Online Protection has just finished their first media campaign, which was a three week plan with $250,000 spent to fight those opposed to online gambling.
The C4COP group ran advertisements on The Washington Post, the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Politico to provide information on the subject of online gambling. According to PokerNews, the group placed an ad on The Washington Post front page which asked readers to stop the congressional ban of online gaming. Readers could then click on the ad for information at the website of the Coalition.
It is unclear as to who is funding the new group but we do know that the American Gaming Association, MGM and Caesars Casino are all supportive of the new organization. According to C4COP Spokeswoman Kristen Hawn, the coalition has not received funding for further campaigning and still must decide on the focus for the next campaign. Hawn commented that the group has just started and this will be a sustained effort in which the Coalition will work to make sure that is no ‘across-the-board ban’.
For now, the Coalition will continue to use social media to alert residents in the US with information on the issue of online gambling. Articles have been written and public speaking engagements also take place to continue to fight against such opponents as Sheldon Adelson and his group, the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling.
In the PokerNews report, John Pappas, the Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance, has stated that the C4COP is a counterbalance to what Adelson is trying to accomplish. Pappas believes that the Coalition has resources that the PPA does not have, such as advertising opportunities.
It will be interesting to see how the Coalition for Consumer and Online Protection group moves forward in their efforts to fight against a federal ban on online gambling.
