The state of New Jersey is expected to get started with online gambling via a soft launch starting tomorrow. The soft launch is expected to run for five days and the players who are physically located in the state would be able to play their favorite poker or casino games online for real money. With the deadline looming, State Senator Raymond Lesniak has stated that he will be making a big announcement tomorrow in the early morning hours. Details have not been provided but many speculate that an expansion for online gambling is imminent.
The announcement is set to take place at 10:30 tomorrow morning and those in legislation have been taken by surprise by the news. David Rebuck is the Director of the Division of Gaming Enforcement in NJ and he stated that he had not talked to Lesniak and was surprised by the announcement.
Those who are in the industry have speculated that the senator will be introducing a new bill which would allow the state to offer their online gambling options on an international level. This could include working with the Isle of Man and Gibraltar, both giants in the world gambling market.
The state will not begin online gambling trials until 6pm tomorrow evening and the announcement is set to take place in the mid-morning hours. Many are now speculating what this could mean and waiting to hear what the senator has to say in regards to the industry.
Also making headlines is Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas billionaire who is strongly against online gambling in the US. Adelson is planning a new coalition to fight against online gambling in the US and has announced the new group will be formed by January 2014 and will try to ban the new market. Lesniak heard of this and stated that a ban on the online gambling industry in the US would eliminate jobs in the thousands as well as billions in revenues for Atlantic City casinos.
Lesniak stated: “We already have given the legal authority for Internet gaming in New Jersey, and state regulators have done a good job in reviewing and authorizing licenses for online gaming businesses. Imposing a federal ban on internet gambling for New Jersey would be an economic catastrophe.”
